personally, i thought bg2 was much better than bg....that being said, i loved them both...it can't hurt to play both especially since the engine didn't really improve much other than higher rez in bg2.

Actually, BG kind of bugs me. Making the protagonist some kind of reincarnated god is a cheesy hack to avoid the difficulty of creating a living, breathing, fantasy-realistic storyline. And other games took after it (Divine Divinity, Morrowind, probably others...). Granted that the game was pulling from Forgotten Realms, where gods walk the earth every other Tuesday, but it's still half-assed IMO.

What's the point in playing a story rich RPG when you're going to ignroe the cheesy fantasy crap? That's half the fun :p

Long gameplay at billions of different options to upgrade your characters. When a friend made his mage he actually got pissed off that he had to choose between hundreds of different spells.

Yeah that's one reason why I don't play Baldur's Gate. The artifact/spell selection pisses me off, as well as the sidequest mumbo-jumbo. There's too damn many of them....!!

there are only a few useful spells though:

mage book: magic missile, illusion thingy that mulitplies you (lvl 2 i think), acid arrow, fireball, haste, stoneskin, breach... after breach at lvl 5, it doesnt really matter IMO

priest/druid book: stoneskin, bless, divine armor thingy (lvl 1), doom, any heal/resurrect spell, plague of insects (druid lvl 5 i think - AWESOME anti-spellcaster), greater restoration, smite evil, and a few other buffs.

You have missed one of the best spells in BG: Animate dead. Essential for the end battle just to distract all the enemies. :)

He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster... when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you...

Does this quote not represent what D&D is so often about? How many times have you played through an RPG only to wonder what it would be like to do it again while being horribly, gruesomely evil?

It's little touches like this quote that make the great RPG's just a touch above the good ones. The Baldur's Gate series is delightful, if you like D&D, get it and play it.

That's a quote by Nietzsche btw.

It's actually 2 quotes by Nietzsche melded into one.

Man, I had to install BG1 last night because of this thread.

So I need a Necromancer in my party to animate dead for end battle? I only played BG1 through to 2/3 of the game back in 1999, I think.

What's the best combination of party members?
I'm thinking:
myself as mage, jaheira, khalid, imoen, that montaron dwarf so I don't get bullied by other evil groups, and maybe branwen for a cleric.

absolutely! lvl 23 wild mage, along with anomen, keldorn, minsc, and sarevok, (korgan died), totally wtf-pwned Melissan.

<MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING >

edit: you don't need animate dead, or any summoning spells for that matter.

what you need are the special items from the Adventurer's Mart in Waukeen's Promenade (i think this is only if you have Throne of Bhaal, can't remember).

Anyway, at the top of the store, Deidre will sell you 2 critical items: the Shield of Balduran and Vhailor's Helm

Shield of Balduran reflects beholder rays - makes the Unseeing Eye and Underdark Beholders quests a total joke

Vhailor's Helm - give this to Keldorn, as he has the most powerful sword in the game - the Carsomyr +5 which you get from Firkaag.

if you have ToB, then get greater whirlwind on your fighters(dont worry about any of the other specials) and the game will be 10x easier.

Also, if you combine the illithium ore with the Mace of Disruption +1, you can wtf-pwn undead - i had viconia 1-hit kill Kangaxx the Demi-Lich (immune to +3 and lower weapons) cause he failed his save vs. death:D:D

nice, thanx. it's been so long....since 1999.

i always played single player. i'm also thinking of restarting with multiplayer instead so I can customize all 6 party members and play the multiplayer solo.

just to change things a bit.
