This is one of the best games of all time, and i remember when i played it for my first time there were a lot of fixes to download and user content that made the game much better. any ideas where to find it? since it's old i'm having trouble finding the sites.

Oh! LOL!

Uhh...not sure about user content or fixes but you can get the patches at any download site (e.g. FileShack, FilePlanet, GamersHell, etc.)

There were some user mods for BG2, but they were more total conversions. Hard to find these days though. Look for Shadows over Soubar, The Darkest Day, Dark Side of the Sword Coast, and Northern Tales of the Sword Coast.

Be advised though, they may not be able to be installed together at the same time, file conflicts and such. The Infinity Engine wasn't the most user mod friendly engine.

Brings back memories🙂. In the time I spent playing and replaying it, I recall a lot of fansites (good walkthroughs...) like gamebanshee. Think they had some mod listings if they're still around.

Probably one of the best game's ever made. I still have the my Collector's Edition! This was the first RPG I really got hooked into. So much fun and made me want to go back and play every other Bioware game. The game was amazingly long too! Still haven't tried NWN2 yet even though I picked it up.

Thanks for the links.

I already have all the patches and many of the mods that I like, but its always good to have even more resources.

Am currently in chap 2 of a new game with a bard main character. Have won the play house but not putting on shows yet.

The only mod I used in this game was the infinite-size scroll cases. Pretty cool to have with a bard actually.

This is all you need, contains fixes to almost all currently known bugs (includes Baldurdash's stuff)

http://www.gibberlings3.net/downloads/index.php#bg2fixpack

The BG2 Fixpack is a WeiDU compilation of fixes for Baldur's Gate II. With the disappearance of Kevin Dorner and the cessation of activity of the Baldurdash fixpack for BG2, several modders and me began working on a new WeiDU fixpack to address the numerous bugs that have been identified since Baldurdash. This collaborative effort, including the work of modders from several different modding communities, has resulted in a fixpack that currently includes all of the fixes addressed by Baldurdash (including the Game Text Update) and several hundred new bugfixes. The project is ongoing, and we're working through a substantial list of bugs culled from various sites, the old Baldurdash forums, and our own research.

should i do full, minimum, or compact set up? i remember there was a catch to this.

full - it puts as much data on your hdd as possible, making load times much faster. otherwise, it'll have to load areas from the cd's - not fun 😛

anyone know what hdd capacity was like in 2000? bg2 is a whopping 2.5gigs! 😀

I may have been behind the loop back then, but in 2000 I had a 6GB hard drive. When you take into account that usable space would be closer to 5.something and that you want a bit of extra space anyways, that's half a hard drive for one game! :Q

1)are there no cd patches?

2)what cache size should i use?

3)should i use mid AND high lighting (for spells) or just high?

4)should i use the beta patch? (throne of bhaal)

yeah, and if you go into the bg2 options.. it says "high end PC - 600mhz PII" 😀😀

Heen - i know there's a nocd somewhere, but i don't remember where. know that it DOES exist. your other option is to use something like powerISO or alcohol120 to create an iso on your hard drive, then mount it using a virtual driver (alcohol 120 or 52, daemon tools).

cache size/lighting? no clue😱

beta patch: i think i used it as well, just make sure you use multiple save slots. bg2 is big enough that it can break, and you may have to revert to a previous says for something (like a quest) to work properly.

I couldn't find a noCD patch, so I used a virtual drive emulator, copied the CD2 onto my hard drive, and played with that. Daemon will work; I used a program called FarStone VirtualDrive.

Ummm.... Back in 2000 I had an 8 gig disk, on my laptop.

But hells yeah, when BG2 came out its full install was quite a serious matter.
Even worse with BG 1. As I recall that was a 5 CD game.

5)What resolution should i play on? 1600x1200 seems kinda small.

6)What FPS should i play at? 60 fps seems wayyy too fast.

1600x1200 does make things seem very small. It really depends on the size of your monitor.
I have a 19" and 1024x768 looks great.
The 60 FPS really isnt the displayed frames per second. Its how fast the AI works. 30 is good, and 25 is OK for folks who are new to the game and dont wanna get stomped in big battles.

60 is insane and probably impossible to control even if you have all the Auto-Pause options turned on.

Also, the 3D acceleration available in the options menu isnt for any of the map or character data, its to enhance the spell effects. And with CPU's being as fast as they are today, its almost useless. 3D mode also seems to have problems in game with newer video cards.

Finally, I highly recommend you get the above noted Collectors Edition. It includes a couple of salesmen who sell awesome magical items not found in the original game. Not the least of which is a shield that reflects Beholder Rays (VERY useful in two major quests of the game).
