Yea. What a turnoff. For me the only thing that could save the genre now is a sequel to PS:Torment (fat chance of that happening).
Don't know about that, I don't believe the genre is terminal yet.
Also there's rumors that BG3 is in the works. I don't see why it wouldn't be true, BG is an excellent franchise.
Linky? I am definately doubtful of a true continuation being released. Maybe a game set in the same world, or relating to BG2 how Icewind Dale related to BG.

Yes, FO3 is being made by Bethesda, with no involvement from the people who worked on FO1 - 2. They're saying it won't just be Morrowind with a Fallout skin, but who knows?

Also, Malladine if you like X-Com you should check out Jagged Alliance 2 and the Urban Chaos user mod / total conversion. Turn-based, squad-level tactical combat goodness with RPG elements (mercs learn/grow, and have equipment like in RPGs and X-Com). JA Galaxy forums

Urban Chaos improves the game a lot? I have JA2 but only played for a couple hrs, I forget why...but it can't be good. I'll have to load it up again. Thanks!

I'd play a fallout game built on the Morrowind engine :)

Although I never played the Urban Chaos game, JA2 is an excellent game. You might have only played for a couple hours because it is a pretty difficult game. Your guys can die very easy if you don't know what you are doing and a lot of the maps are unforgiving. Once you get a few decent mercs, the game becomes a lot more fun.

Oh and thanks for reminding me why I thought they were butchering the Fallout series, Dave. Yea Bethesda stated it won't just be morrowind, but they also stated they weren't going to stray too far from what they know. Which means it will be morrowind-esque. Which, in my opinion, cannot be good. Morrowind had barely any story / plot / etc and Fallout was quite the opposite. I'll cross my fingers, but I won't say the series is saved until I read some reviews of the finished product.

Edit: Also, Fallout had a pretty complex battle system that allowed for strategy etc, while Morrowind was pretty much a hack and slash with 0 strategy.

Actually UC is just "different" rather than "better" -- different maps, weapons (Warsaw Pact instead of NATO), NPCs, and story. If you haven't played "plain" JA2 through yet, you really should give it another chance.

Try the "easy" difficulty level, it's still a good challenge. I've played through JA2 a couple of times, plus the Unfinished Business spinoff, and I still only play at the medium difficulty.

The first few hours of gameplay is challenging because you're almost unarmed (just pistols), like in X-Com when you have near-useless rifles at the start. Once you get SMGs and a rifle or two the game takes off.

Tip: add Lynx to your starting squad as a 1-day hire, along with Fox and Wolf or Ice as 1-week if you can (plus the IMP custom merc). Lynx starts with a rifle which evens the odds considerably. Be sure to give Fox two pistols once you have a spare since she's ambidextrous ("dual wielding" for D&D fans).

Atari now owns the rights to any AD&D games, and they recently confirmed that BG3 is in development (apparently it was reported in PCGamer). However, they have not even gotten as far as naming a development company, so it will be a very long time before it sees the light of day.
