It may not be the worst place.. but coming from SF, i'm guessing he'll hate it. I lived in the east bay (danville) for a while and a move to bako would be a total culture shock for those not familiar with it to move straight in.

You need to give us more info on the job you are getting/looking for. I find it hard to believe that Bakersfield is the only place in CA you can find a job that pays well>!?!?!?

Following your example:

Death Valley is a great place to live:

100 miles away you have the beautiful town of Las Vegas

300 miles away, you have Los Angeles and Orange County

3000 miles away, you have Times Square in NYC.

Study your math. All my examples are less than 100 miles. All yours are over 100 miles. Taking a class in logic could be helpful too.

Why would you live anywhere that takes 45 mins to get EVERYWHERE? And we are not talking about giving up the convenience of nearby recreation in exchange for living in a pristine area such as a private island or in the mountains. No, we are talking about a barren, ugly wasteland. I can be on a mountain trail in 15 minutes. I can be at the beach in 5. That's what normal people do for recreation. They don't drive 45 mins everyday.

Why am I not surprised you know so much about Bakersfield?

The job was a technical engineer for one of the oil/water drilling companies. 6 figure salary. I can find another well paying job, but, being only 2 years out of college - its not pouring high paying jobs around me. Lets just just say that SB is pretty damn close to paradise... more $$ would be nice - but i think i'm happier with what i have now.

Yea, b/c the east bay is out in the cuts... /sarcasm

Do you have to live IN a major city to be familiar with the surrounding areas? Don't try to threadcrap

I don't know why you are not surprised that I know so much about Bakersfield?

What I hate is the drive there from my residence in San Francisco. It takes 5 hours of boring driving, sometimes lots of traffic. But, I enjoy getting out of the fog in March and heading to the desert where spring has started. It's quite beautiful to sit in a natural hot spring, drinking beer and watching falling stars.

Bakersfield is good if you know how to use it. Rent is cheap, stores are available and on the weekends you can make short trips to beautiful places.

From San Francisco where rents are high, I often drive 2.5 hours or more to get to Monterey or Big Sur. Everything is so close to Bakersfield.

BTW, 45 minutes will hardly get you to an open piece of freeway in the bay area, you'd still be stuck in traffic.

thanks for the replies, however gratuitous.

it seems the place could be tolerable for a year. it won't have the asian culture i'm used to in the bay or LA, but it'll be a good lesson in undiversity i suppose. i'll lay low, get my work done, and get out.

fyi, bako has not one but two costcos! yea, who woulda thunk it.
