i have yet to understand why i drink (alcoholic beverages that is). i just got back from a post final party with a bunch of friends and all i'm left with is an empty wallet and one wicked hangover (not sure on that yet, but that way that i'm feeling now, i'm thinkin that i'll be hurting tomorrow). i guess i like waking up with splitting headachs and other common symptoms of drinking too much the night before.

i think i'm going to quit. at the rate i'm going now, i think alcohol could become a large problem later in my life.

for those of you that have quit... how did you do it? all of the friends that i hang out with drink, i'm thinking that the temptation is going to be very high next time i go to a party...

I drink, but I have laid down some rules. These seem to work for me so drinking doesn't become a problem.

1) NEVER drink while depressed. And yes, I have refrained from drinking because of this, even when a party was being thrown at my house.

2) NEVER drink 2 days in a row.

3) NEVER drink if you actually want a alcoholic beverage. What I mean by this is that if I am craving a beer because of the actuall taste, then that is a time I don't drink.

4) Know your limit. Getting drunk is alright, but don't go to the point of being "trashed" drunk. I must always remember everything the next day<--this is actually the hardest one for me.

These are some general rules that I have come up with since I started drinking (about a year ago) and they have worked pretty well for me. More rules will probably be added as my experience grows.

Aspirin is the deal.. One of the main causes of hangovers is constricted blood vessels.. Aspirin keeps them from constricting so much.. Lotsa water and ordinary aspirin are the best for avoiding a hangover.

BUt.. you have to remember to drink the water and take the aspirin BEFORE going to sleep/passing out. :D

The problem is not your consumption, it is your control as to how much you consume.

Drinking peer pressure is so high school.

If you really feel like you're going to be ridiculed for not having something in hand, water down your drinks after you've had a few sips, or drink mixed drinks, like a rum and coke light on the rum.

If you're travelling by car, be the designated driver.

Of course, if your friends are such heavy drinkers, they probably won't even notice if you're sans beverage after the first few rounds.

When I was 18 and new to drinking(this is th US btw where 21 is the legal limit) I got trashed several times. As wasted as I was, and even the couple times I passed out, I STILL remember everything that happened those nights. I also knew enough and had enough self control to not do things I wouldn't do when I was sober. This of course is why I hate hearing people blame alcohol on mistakes they may have made that night. Let's get back to the point though.

I still drink now, but it's only once in a while. I've made a personal rule which hasn't been hard to follow to NEVER drink more than once a week. I do this because I will not get drunk if I have to work the next day, and if I AM working the next day I will only have a couple of drinks and then a couple glasses of water after to prevent any morning effects. While it's easy for me to get drunk, I don't go as far as to get trashed anymore. The trick is finding that "plateau" because then you can stay at if for hours. If you pace yourself properly you can not get trashed, but stay drunk for hours. Great for bachelor parties.

The big trick is not so much in quitting as much as it is pacing yourself. If you learn how to drink, it will never be a problem and can in fact enhance certain social situations. It makes everyone less critical of one another and not so uptight. Good way to lighten up the mood.

Of course anything in excess will kill you. I'm willing to bet that cigs are pretty safe if you only have 1 or 2 a day as well. It's more about pacing yourself. Your body is designed to fight off toxins, and generally in MOST cases it's good for it to be exposed to a little of something now and then to keep it on it's toes. Overdoing anything will kill you eventually, and of course before it does that alcohol itself will likely ruin your life before killing you. Great way to die...

Now I'm 20. I don't drink more than once a week, and it's usually about once or twice a month, although the last time I actually got drunk was in early october at my friends bachelor party, and it's good to note that I wasn't totally trashed...just drunk. Since then, the only alcohol I've had has been a drink with a meal or something of that sort.

Everything in life is about control. Most things in life will not hurt you in moderation, but overdoing it will kill you. Once you have achieved a state of good control(which comes as you get more experience) you will be all set. It only took me about a year to learn how to drink, just as someone else here has mentioned. It's fun for a while, but the novelty wears off, and after enough hangovers most people stop. Lucky me though...I've never knowingly had a legitimate hangover. I always had a glass or two of water before passing out or going to sleep so I'd be fine in the morning. The WORST that ever happened is a couple mornings after being extremely wasted I'd be a little slower at normal tasks, and instead of being uppity I'd be calmer than normal for me...not really a negative affect at all since it would shut me up for more than 5 minutes.

Anyhow, to end this I will reiterate that learning CONTROL is the key. Without control not only in life but when using drugs, you will be in bad shape.

Heresy!!!!!

Beer is the nectar of the gods. Be careful what you say for they shall smite you for your villany.

Anyway.....while I've moved on past my "drink to get hammered" youth, I've never understood why people drank alcoholic beverages that they didn't like the taste of. I drink beer (well, not all beer, heh) because it is pleasant to my tastebuds.

Same with red wines. I can think of no greater pleasure (OK, well maybe I can) than a bottle of Mondavi, Groth, or Stags Leap (Reserves) Cabernets....mmmmmmmmmmm, a feast for the senses. Bring your checkbook.

Never take aspirin before during or after drinking.

Aspirin & Ibuprofen Warning:

Aspirin & Ibuprofen Warning:

When drinking, aspirin can be very dangerous and quite poisonous. Aspirin should never be taken before, after, or during a drinking session. Alcohol already irritates you gastrointestinal tract and aspirin just increases the acidity that can cause internal bleeding. The AMA published an article stating that taking an aspirin before a night of drinking can increase the blood alcohol levels by 26%, thus prolonging the presence of alcohol in your system.

Check out this article from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicne:

"Acetominophen, Aspirin, and Ibuprofen should never be taken with alcohol (unless directed by a physician). Alcholics even should avoid them when not drinking. Tylenol is metobolized by the liver and if the liver has upregulated p450 enzyme system it releases a toxic metabolite. Alcohol plus acetominophen has led to numerous liver transplants and is very dangerous. Recently, Tylenol has been forced to put labels on their bottles with alcohol warnings. Ibuprofen is also metabolized by the liver and little may be known. However, alcohol is a stomach irritant and NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen plus alcohol is also a bad idea."

Tylenol is the worst. Bye bye liver! Never EVER take tylenol, before, during, or after a night a drinking.

why is this?
