Bah, Steam still sucks

I fired up Steam to see if it would actually let me play any games earlier, and to no surprise, it wouldn't let me. Have had this problem for a long time with any online games with steam, where i can only play a minute or less before i get booted with some random error. Such as:

* Bad Parse in Client Command
* Bad Command Character in Client Mod
* Bad Command Character in Client Command
* CMD_MAXBACKUP HIT
* Fragment transmission aborted at 1/1
* Host error: Bad server message
* Host error: Cl_Entitynum: #### is an invalid number, Cl_max edicts is ####
* Host_Error: CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message - svc_bad
* Host_Error: CL_Parse_Version: Server is protocol -######### instead of 47
* Host_Error: DispatchUserMsg: User Msg CZCareer/130 sent too much data (195 bytes), 192 bytes max
* Received fragment out of order
* svc_bad Wrote erroneous message to buffer.dat Host_Error: UserMsg: Not Present on Client ###

Any most recently, this one 😵

So i haven't been able to play anything on Steam for at least 5 months, and even before that i still had a lot of previous problems with steam. Which is why i've always hated it.

They have a help page here It seems Steam doesn't like my router, or my router's firmware. It's my view that no one should have to downgrade their router firmware, or have to buy a new router to play the games they paid for online.

I have the right ports open, have also tried DMZ mode and disabling my firewall of course, with the same results. Complaining to steam will obviously do nothing, they probably get millions of complaints a day. Anyone else ever had this kind of problem and been able to fix it? It'd be nice if i was able to play the games i wanted to play, like CS and DoD. Steam has long been keeping those games away from me, which is probably a good thing, but i don't like it 😛

Nope, never had any problems with Steam . . . other than forgetting my password.

I have a Linksys router that I bought roughly 2 years ago.

i have had steam for a very very long time and i have still have to face one issue. I have bought over 7 games over steam by now : )

If I were you I would ditch the firmware that doesn't work and play some of the best games out there right now and quit complaining about it.

I'm not really complaining, just asking for help.

Why do other games work fine online without having to downgrade my router's firmware? It just doesn't seem right. Gotta be something on Steam's end. I want to like steam, and i want steam to like me is all.

Agreed steam is a piece of trash software written by incompetent developers. They should be taken out back and kicked repeatedly by drunken mules.

I think you can tell how I feel about steam 🙂

This may not work at all, but you can try to force steam to update its software platform in case its getting corrupted. look for a file clientregistry.blob . make sure steam is shutdown, then delete this file. Now restart Steam. It should update. I've had numerous problems with steam that this simple thing has fixed.

Honestly, I think the programmers at Valve are some of the best. I mean, compared to Gamespy, Steam runs incredibly fast. The in-game server browser is astonishingly fast and easy to use, compared to Battlefield 2 which sucks. Most of the games out now have really sloppy and poorly coded things like that.

I agree with this guy. Steam may not work flawlessly, but not much else out there beats it. It's come such a long way since when hl2 first came out (which is when I started using it).

have you tried uninstalling steam and deleting all the files associated with it and the games and then reinstalling? yeah, will take awhile but it may work.

Unfortunately, I would also have to say try removing the games and Steam, then reinstall. It is a hassle, but maybe with all of the updates, something was broken in your install. If that doesn't work, you will probably need to change the firmware on your router. If they say there's an issue with the firmware, then that is the only work around.. at least one that they have.

Linksys routers are notorious for issues like this. One night a friend of mine was getting kicked off WoW every 3 minutes like clockwork. Turned out the firmware in the linksys router was old and had to be updated.

No idea why, but this isnt the first time I have seen Linksys routers associated with issues like this.
