Bah! Looks like my Buckmark barrel spalled >:-(

My Browning Buckmark 22 pistol has been one of my favorite guns since I got it last year. This past weekend it was acting funny... very inaccurate and some of the holes in the paper seemed to be larger and elongated (no bueno). Once I noticed this I put it away. Got to cleaning it today and there seems to be a spall or at least a bruised area in the barrel. Despite my best efforts cleaning it looks to be physical damage and not something I can clean.

That's unfortunate enough as it is, but I also can't easily get a hold of Browning it seems. I couldn't find any email address, their phone hours aren't great, and I can't leave a message. The website says I should try talking to a local dealer but this seems like it'll be a bigger issue.

Anybody deal with Browning before?

Spall... bruised area? Not something I've heard of before... 😕

Is it damage to the barrel crown? Are you sure there isn't just lead buildup in the barrel? Fairly common problem with .22's.

Edit: Ok, I guess it could make sense if you mean like pieces of metal are breaking off of the inside of the barrel? That would have to be a major, major manufacturing defect...

Sorry, I was using steelworker terms. Yes by spall I mean barrel damage. If it's just buildup it has to be the most stubborn buildup I've dealt with. I can try to work it off with something a little harder, but I do think the barrel might be toast.

They typically refer anyone needing replacement parts to Midwest Gun Works. I think they are their official parts supplier.

They carry tons of aftermarket and OEM barels there, I just replaced the barrel on my buckmark with a Tactical Solutions threaded barrel, and it is like shooting a whole new pistol.

I was actually looking at those barrels recently, though the cost kind of turned me off. I got the combo rail/rear site from them though and like it. I mean before this issue the thing was already pretty damned accurate. Did you get the longer barrel or something? I can't imagine it making that much more of a difference.

I went with the same length barrel, 5.5"

It made a huge difference for me, though mine was pretty accurate before with the bull barrel. The difference for me was mostly the weight and feel of the gun, it made the gun much much lighter as those barrels are aluminum with a steel insert. I got the threaded model, so I can screw on my Gemtech Outback II, and also got the compensator, scope rail/rear site combo, and their aluminum grips for it - and also added a primary arms micro dot.

Even without the microdot, the feel of the thing is much improved for me and shoots like a completely different and better .22 pistol (not that it was bad before though).

Here is a pic of mine after I installed all of the parts -

I also have a 10/22 that I have had for a couple of years, with Tactical Solutions threaded barrel in the same color, so when I put it on this gun, I figured I might as well make it match the 10/22 in color.

The barrels are pricey though, but IMO, worth it if you shoot a lot.

That looks pretty sweet. When it comes to guns I don't usually go on appearance, but I always go with blue if possible... my friends kind of make fun of me for it 😛 I actually really wanted to get the Volquartsen i-fluted rifle when I saw it.
