I was thinking of telling them that I'm a white supremacist so they wouldn't pick me.

But considering it's in Torrance, CA where there's an awful lot of minorities...plus I'm half asian. That just wouldn't work. 😛

I figure if I sit in a trial, it'll be at least a mildly educational experience. The justice system has always interested me.

Bring The Runaway Jury by John Grisham along with you. Every few minutes, look up and exclaim "Ahhhhh! I'll have to try that." or "Payoffs, here I come!".
 
I actually don't mind jury duty either. I was picked to sit on a jury as an alternate. That really sucked. I had to sit through the whole trial, lasted about a week and a half, and wasn't allowed to factor in the decision because I was only a alternate. Anyway, we gave the woman (she was in a car accident, had permenant leg injuries) $250,000.00.

I would have been picked to sit in on a jury for a murder last year, but my summer vacation interfered. I was picked by both lawyers, then the judge asked me if I would be able to attend the trial every day, as it would last the better part of a month, maybe longer. I told him I had a vacation scheduled for mid July, which would have been in the middle of the trial. The judge excused me for that exact reason, and I wasn't even trying to get out of it, I wanted to be on the jury. The defendent owned a tattoo parlor in CT, he murdered a woman in it, then buried her body in New Hampshire. He ended up getting convicted, 70+ years.
 
Civil trials I don't mind sitting in on, but criminal trials, I have problems with.

To get out, tell them you're an engineer. Answer every question directed at the jury. Talk as much as you can get away with. They'll kick you right off asap.

To get picked, tell them you're in business for yourself. Only answer questions directed straight at you and don't volunteer any answers. Try to sound politically correct when asked questions even if you don't believe in the politically correct point of view.
 
I had jury duty last summer and all I did was sit in the same room from 8-5 with a lunch break. SUCKED. Never got called, or anything. Just sat.
 
I had jury duty a few weeks ago. I went, sat in a room for an hour, then they let us go because the case had been settled. $33 for an hour of sitting there! 😛
 
Fortunately I was never chosen as a juror in a 187 case back in March.

Even got paid a few bucks since the jury selection dragged about an extra hour into the second day, hahah (no pay for the first day, since most people get to go home quickly).
 
I'm likely going to be serving tomorrow, and I'm actually looking forward to it. I've received a summons a couple of times before, but since I was in school out of state I wasn't able to serve.

Did you end up being seated on the jury, Amnesiac?

Actually, I just went through this and even sat on the jury. There was surprisingly little waiting.
 
When I reported today I was #27 in the line. A few people knew the defendant and even though they said it wouldn't affect their decision-making, they were excused or struck by the defense/prosecution. 😀

So I ended up being #13 and was the alternate juror. About 2 minutes after we sat down and got our jury pins on, though, the defense spoke w/ the prosecutor for about 5 seconds and then to the judge. We got sent to the jury room.

Five minutes later, the judge tells us there has been a plea bargain and we are free to go. We still have to report tomorrow and be in the pool again, though. 😕

I don't really mind, but it strikes me as a bit bizarre.

Only ~50% or less of those on the list of prospective jurors actually showed up, though. :frown:

Nope, thanks to the one-day/one-trial system, I sat there for 7 hours putting together a jigsaw puzzle with an old asian lady.

Only 2 trials were on the docket on Friday, 1 of which was settled beforehand. The remaining trial needed 15 people, and there were 5 volunteers. 10 were picked to stay at random. The rest of us left at 4:00pm.

Woo-hah.
