Yeah, there's an intelligent viewpoint. You be sure to make that argument when some idiot decides going 100 MPH on the highway is a good idea, blows out a tire because it's not rated, loses control and flies into your lane and kills you.

Or some genius who decides to go 60 around a curve, floats into your lane, and kills you.

Speed limits are artificially low in a lot of places, I'll grant that, but getting rid of them entirely is an unbelievably stupid thing to do.

That was the argument the cop made to me when he pulled me over.

I drive a car that can handle the speeds (bmw z4) and i have the rated tires, but he still said, shit happens, you could blow out a tire and lose control.

The car itself glides down the interstate at 130 without vibration or any feelings of instabilility. But I've only driven that fast a few select times (got up to 165 once) and its only for a brief moment, on the interstate, in the middle lane, with no traffic around me.

Sure, you know about your car, but you don't know about the cars of other drivers. We set down laws so that we feel safe as a community; we give up rights to protect ourselves from the abuse of such rights by others.

I'm ok with speed limits but hate it when it's not optimized for traffic but for county profits. It sucks to be driving on a 45mph road that drops to 30 for a stretch where they put up their speed traps. On highways 75 mph should be fine, as long as someone isn't weaving through traffic.

Exactly. I've noticed a pattern:

Speed limit 70. People do 70-75. (Michigan)

Speed limit 65. People do 70-75. (I-39)

Speed limit 60. People do 70-75.

Speed limit 55. People do 70-75. (I-90 near Chicago)

Speed limit 45. People do 70-75. (Construction zone with no workers present)

Speed limit 45. People do 45-50. (Construction zone, workers present)

Most people tend to drive at a speed safe for their surroundings on a freeway.

I got a $200+ ticket for doing 68 in a 65 in bumfuck, California :(

Illinois.

I know in Missouri, where I live now, I'd be looking at like $400 in fines alone.

And I was passing a guy that was drifting out of his lane. I was doing closer to 70, when the guy started to veer over in my lane (not dramatically but enough for concern). After a few times of him veering over, I just screw it, and punched it to get around him. As I was going around him, cop got me on radar.

bahhhhhh

cop said " could have just slowed down and passed behind him, what would happen if you blew out a tire?"

I was going 55 in a 25 and my ticket was only $130 in Iowa, then again I got it removed because the cop was a lying bastard.

A few days ago, I got a ticket for doing 86 in a 65. $95 fine.

I called my lawyer, and he's charging $200+ fine to get me out of it. Total = $295.

Says it will never go on my record, and he guarantees it.

He's gotten me out of messes before, as well as friends who had worse and walked away clean. So I know he gets results. He also has the closest law office next to the court house, and knows everybody there.

I guess its better than just paying the fine and getting the marks on my driving record. Not to mention, if I took care of this myself, I'd have to go to court, so gas money ($10-$15) plus time off work (4 hours = $100). So if I took care of this myself, risking them still putting it on my record, I'd only save about $100.

I don't even live in that state anymore, so I don't drive there much.

Meh...

i woudl have been going alot faster then 44 in a 35 if i was driving through E St Louis

but yea SLOW DOWN

I have to keep my speeds semi neutral in ESTL. only because I got scammed by a cop that is on their force, and I almost had him put in jail over it. We did ruin his financial life though (ran him into bankruptcy, ruined his credit, busted him on bankruptcy fraud).

I really don't wnat to get pulled over by him

ESTL is the worst. Particularly, Brooklyn.

My buddy got pulled over (on his way home from work), handcuffed and thrown in the back of a Brooklyn squad car.

They accused him of having a felony warrant in Chicago on a "routine" stop (forget what excuse they used to pull him over). He's originally from there.

After 30 minutes of verifying his identity, he pointed out his ethnicity. The wanted man was of a different race.

They let him go, but damn near had him extradited to Chicago. If he hadn't spoken up and defended himself, they would have.

This is why our legal system is a corrupt worthless POS. If you don't have a lawyer they throw the book at you, if you have a good lawyer or connections you can get away with murder. Our legal system is nothing more a protection racket to make lawyers rich, and has nothing to do with justice.

I don't like the sound of that last statement at all.

Brooklyn, Venice, its all bad.. Alot of it, when you drive through it, looks like its straight out of Baghdad. Just absolute destruction everywhere.

Did you know the predominantly white town of Belleville (pop-60,000), which is the closest town to ESTL was on the show "60 minutes" as being the most racist town in america.. they basically said thats what happens when you put a wealthy area right next to what may be the worst piece of land in the USA. The closest not ESTL zip code has an mean annual income that is higher than all but one zip code in all of St. Louis county. its like, 1 block, you are in one of the nicest richest areas in all of St. Louis, and the next block, its the worst ghetto.

You paid that? LOL. There isnt a judge around my county that would let a 3mph over limit charge stand. Hell, you have to be going 6-7 over to even get a second glance by a cop.

I fought the ticket and fucking lost. God I hate California, even though every passing day I want to move back home.

You fight it by going to court?

I got out of doing 54 in a 35 (in CA) by doing a trial by written declaration, and will go that route for every future ticket. If you lose, you can request for a new trial. My brother did it after me and had won as well.

I did trial by written declaration like TicketAssassin suggested, but I still lost. I mailed in the forms and everything two weeks before the final deadline with certified mail and for some reason I was found guilty the day before the letter arrived (I checked the tracking on USPS with the certified mail number - yes it works on the USPS site the same a d/c# works).

In PA, the vehicle code starts listing fines at 5mph over. I'd think that a margin like that would be impossible to prove, unless he's timing you with two IR trip-beams - a radar gun has its own margin of error, as does your speedometer.
