Baggage Fee Question

I always wind up on Regional Jets where you can "gate check" something that might have otherwise been carry-on (since there's no room on the tee-nincy little planes).

Can you still do that (now that the airlines are charging for first checked bag?)

QFT. Had several people do this on a trip I took 2 weeks ago. I checked my bags, didn't want to try and bring it through security. Besides, as a business trip, everything is reimbursed. Still BS IMO tho.
