Baffled

I have just taken my second hard disk and DVD ROM out of my old PC and transferred them to my new one.
Now I have a major problem.
The old PC isn`t working anymore. It still has it`s C: drive but there are no signs of life at all. No beeps, no nothing.
I have noticed that if I keep the IDE cable in my CD-ROM it is also dead, but if I remove it I can open and close the tray ???
I tried resetting the BIOS and still nothing.
I don`t have a wrist strap but I grounded myself and I`m pretty sure I didn`t touch anything I wasn`t supposed to.
Can anyone help at all ?

Have you verified that the jumper settings on the drives are correct in their new homes?

Yes, but I`ll do it again just to make absolutely certain.

make sure the ide cable isn't upside down. i've seen that make a computer act dead too. does it work without the drives connected?

The remaining hard disk is on the primary channel on it`s own. I tried turning the cable round and tried using the cable from the CD-ROM. Nothing is happening. There is power to the motherboard (an ASUS CUSL2-M) as the light on the board lights up, but apart from that it seems dead

The best thing to do is remove all peripherals and replace them one by one to pinpoint the problem. Make sure you HDD is set to single drive and if that doesn't work try cable select.

I would try cable select first. I had a drive set to Master, I could install Win 2k, but couldn't rebot to finish install until I set the drive to CS.

I`ve stripped it down to just the processor and built it up from there, bit by bit.
Looks like the only thing working is the status light on the motherboard
It`s definately nothing to do with the power as I can open the CD tray except when the IDE cable is plugged in, and the CPU fan is working.
This is weird!!!

OK, I`m clutching at straws here, because I don`t want to lose this PC.
If I had somehow managed to short a connection while I was taking the drive out would the motherboard light still come on ?

Keep everything out and build from there.

btw - I've had my slot-1 processor only half in before and it wouldn't post. When I was just about ready to give up I noticed the little gap. A little push and it booted. Have done the same with AGP and PCI cards before. The system doesn't like it when cards are half-way in.

It`s fixed. As unlikely as it seems, I stuck a small flat bladed screwdriver nearly vertically in the floppy access hole like a crowbar and gave the outer plastic (?) facing a slight push out from the metal case. Whatever was wrong with it, this did the trick
That kept me up ALL night trying to figure it out.
