hey, i was doin some tweaking etc last night and i noticed that my comp is boiling hot so i checked temps and the cpu is at like 60-65 Celsius... that's pretty damn hot...

now i dont get it... ok well specs before anything else i guess:

athlonxp 2100+
MSI nforce2
Samsung PC2700 CL2
WD 80GB SE
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro

And i have a burner and 2 case fans also hooked up, that's all. I'm running stock fan/hs but the athlon ones are supposed to be good aren't they? Also my case is a 21" and the 2 case fans should really help to cool things down.. oh and nothing is overclocked and im not even running aggressive timings so basically can anyone offer any insight as to why its so friggin hot?

I'm completely baffled.

my 2500 used to run at 65C idle, now i have it o/c by 300mhz and MUCH cooler with the new SLK800 and tornado fans

What is your room temp? Stock hsf combo wouldn't be the best for extreme cooling, but if your room temp is room temp 70-85F, it should be able to keep it at a reasonable temp, I'll say under 60C.

Sometimes heatsinks do get clogged with dust on the fins, a good cleaning of the heatsink and fan usually lowers it a few degrees C.

got the same problem man, what baffles me is that i got 3 case fans, a volcano on the cpu, it still runs 58-60 celcius.. i've tried MANY fan configurations and variations of positioning, nothing works much, maybe it is just that 2000+ and up are hot regularly :/

granted, there is a fair ammount of dust on the fans... ive just been too lazy/busy to clean it...

i guess next time i order a new part (hopefully soon) ill toss in a better fan and heatsink...
my room temp varies, right now im staying at a friends and its really stuffy i hate it, ill leave it by the window in my new place...

How do you have your case fans setup?

Is there one in front, one in the rear?

Is the one in front incoming and the one in the rear exhaust?

thats VERY upsetting considering theyre 0.13 processors arent they? ive never used anything other than amd from my very first k6II 450 and i hate to admit this but intel sure knows how to make cool-running cpus... :(

thats exactly how they're set up, theres 4 actually, but if i connect more than 2 of them my system gets unstable (crappy ps i guess)

WaterCooling is your best friend... somewhat expensive YES! But worth it and my friend has his 2100+ @ 2Ghz. It's low noise, no hassle once its setup correctly. His temps are 45 degrees Celcius and below (depending on days).. phew I thought my 43 degrees on my Celeron (.13 micron) were bad :D

What's the Case temperature might I ask?

i suggest:

1) take compressed air, or anything similar, blow out dust in heatsink. take a good blow for whole system while you're at it

2) put the front fan on the back if possible. it should be more effective with 2 fans in the back. my antec SX630 came with 2 fans both in the back, i tried one on front and back, then both on back, and it's much cooler with both fans on the back.

this should remind everyone that AMD actually suggests that front fans have no impact on cooling, which is true in my experience

hmmm im definitely gonna switch over to 2 back fans then...

case is uhh i cant remember off the top of my head, a lil lower than proc i guess
either way it didnt alarm me at all since i cant remember it... :p

Just remember that the maximum temperature for an Athlon XP processor is 95 degrees C. So your 60 degree is OK.

60-65 is scorching?

hahaha

I ran at 72 or so for a month. Then at a LAN party where the room was pretty hot I hit 80 (yes I've since fixed my cooling situation, but none the less I ran over 70 for a month and it was fine).

60-65 is fine, your Athlon won't even notice it.

If you can get it down that's good, but I wouldn't worry about your CPU being at 60.

Try it, but creating low pressure in the case is not the best cooling method. Having more inflow than outflow seems to be more likely to help keep things cool, though the best situation is simply moving the most air through the case.

What I found is that drilling a 3"(80mm) hole in the side of the case and putting an inflow fan there makes the most difference. It didn't blow onto my cpu, having no effect on cpu temps, but my system temps dropped 10c.

I think that having a front fan does have a lot of impact on cooling. In my Antec SLK3700AMB, it came with a 120mm fan standard in the rear, and I added a 120x120x25mm fan in the front. In addition to my SLK-800A + 80mm Smart Fan II, I have a 2500+ overclocked to 2800+ speeds. The computer idles around 100-102 F and, under load, is anywhere from 104-106 F (depending on the temperature in the room). The room temperature usually never goes above 72 F (its in the basement)...a very well ventilated room. When I bump it to 3200+/400Mhz FSB, it still isn't too high--108-110 F under load.

I ran my dual Barton 2500+@2100MHz at about 62C.:) I only used the retail coolers.

i think there is something wrong with those 2100s, my bud has one and it runs hot as a motha too, but it runs stable. dont quote me on this but i thought i read on the AMD spec page that they can run up to 85c

well maybe xp's can go up to 80 or 90 or whatever and that's somewhat reassuring but still too hot for my liking...

so yeah ill try to get a better ps so i can hook up all 4 case fans and get a better fan and heatsink and it should lower my temps a lil :)
