Bad Wireless performance on Asus EEE box

I bought my parents an Asus EEE box, the little mini desktop with their custom linux distro. So far everything is just great and find except for one thing.

First off they had an Imac G4 in the same location about 3 months ago and the thing got great signal and the internet was fast. I have a Verizon Fios G router and they should defiantly be getting signal.

What is odd is that I look at the signal and it will fluctuate from 66 % to 18%. The web performance is just bad, video's constantly having to buffer, web pages taking more than minutes to load. I do not know what it could be and am in dire need of some help because I can't find too much online. I really wanna make my computer illiterate parents happy because they feel so good just to know how to search for pages or use youtube.

Is it possible for me to install Mac OsX via USB key? I feel like that may give me better signal.

If the signal is that inconsistent, you probably have an interference problem. Install Netstumbler on the machine and do a scan to see what other signals are nearby. Set the router to use a channel that is not being used by anything else (use channel 1, 6, or 11). If it is interference, that should fix the problem. If it doesn't help, then it might be an issue with the router or simply a bad wireless adapter (or driver install) on the computer.

I had the exact same settings with their Imac and that system had no problem with connectivity. Other wireless devices dont have a problem. I think it may be the wireless adapter but I dont want to go out and buy a new one without knowing that will work. I do have a Linksys N USB wireless adapter but I dont think that will install on Asus E-OS.
