Bad Video Card or something else?

I am trying to upgrade my video card and I am having a hard time. I pulled out a functional video card and installed the new card into the same slot. When I boot up the PC, the device manager sees only a 'Standard VGA Adapter' and not my shiny new card. If I re-install the original card, the device manager recognizes the card and works as good as ever.

When I try to install the drivers, it loads up some software, but the driver remains a generic Windows driver for the generic VGA adapter. The card works for web browsing, but games error due to 'no compatible video card installed'.

I have un-installed the drivers a few times and re-installed the card a few times but no luck.

I am avoiding the specifics of the OS and card make/model to avoid flame wars.

Should the device manager identify the card without a driver???

Please don't. You can if you want but if you gave us the system specs it would be better.

Well, then there is really no more help we can give you with your general information.

Oh, and for future reference, placing your first post in a forum with the assumption that a war is going to start if you give too much information, is not the best way to receive good help.

I apologize if I offended anyone by trying to avoid some issues. I do appreciate all the help I can get.

My OS is Vista 64, SP2. My new video card is an ASUS Radeon R9 270. The driver that came with the card supports Windows XP, 7, and 8... but not Vista. I emailed ASUS and they responded quickly with the suggestion of checking AMD.COM. I downloaded "13-12_winvista_64_DD_CC_whql" from AMD.com. This driver is supposed to be designed for this video card and Vista 64. I have installed the software, un-installed it, and re-installed it. I have also physically removed the card and re-installed it. The device manager still shows a generic VGA adapter with a generic driver.

Should the device manager identify the card without a driver or is the driver required to identify the card???

So, does it give you an error when you install the drivers, or does it just do nothing?

Have you tried using Windows Update to install the drivers?

If you right-click on the card in device manager, you can manually install the driver from the location the AMD installer put the files, or you can tell Windows to find the driver (although even with 7 I don't have the best of luck with that option).

Is this a home-built machine? If so what motherboard does it have? If not, what model is the machine?

I think I recall reading somewhere that you can use the ASUS R9 270 Windows 7 driver on Vista and it will work just fine.

Depend on FW embedded into ROM of card. Some need, some don't .
I would test video card on any other pc.
Seems you have some HW incompatibility

which says to 'adjust' the Windows 7 driver to accept Vista and it works like it it should. It is a bit of a bother that the AMD driver for an AMD chip does not work and that ASUS decide not to support Vista.
