Aloe. Though if the burn is serious enough, consult a doctor. To make the Aloe even better, I store it in the fridge. Nothing better than cold aloe to quickly cool a sunburn.

Bad idea, but it worked for me. I had a really bad sunburn last fall when I went to San Diego. But I didn't want it to spoil my vacation, so I went back out in the sun the next day and burned again. It caused the burned layer of my skin to peel and my burn went away. I can't imagine that it's good for you, but it worked.

Mix Baking Soda with water and apply the paste to the sunburnt areas...
When the burn no longer feels 'hot', rinse with cool water and apply Aloe.

Aloe, hands down. It is still one of the best burn treatments in existance.

The only real remedy for sunburn is not to get it. Once you've got it, ibuprofen or other OTC pain killer can help, and aloe, but in the end, you're just going to have to tough it out.

I recommend Bullfrog sunblock. I use the spray-on stuff. I can go an entire day kayaking (6-8 hours) in the surf (i.e. I'm getting wet, not just sitting dry in my boat) and maybe reapply once halfway through if I remember or get hungry, and I don't get burnt anymore.

One of my favorite memories is my first day in Cancun last May. I went down to the beach with all my buddies who wanted to be cool so they sat there on the beach with their shirts off, "tanning." They kept telling me to "be a man" and take my shirt off so I could get a tan.
Funk that. I wore my T-shirt and my wide-brimmed hat and plenty of bullfrog when I went in the water.
The next day most of them didn't even go out drinking because of their sunburns.

Suckers. Trust a guy who spent his whole life at the beach :)

Moisten your skin, and make a paste of baking soda. Gently (guess I don't have to remind you) apply this over the burned area. It will remove the sting for awhile.

I am allergic to the chemicals in Bullfrog . . . if I get any near my eyes, I am in big trouble.

The best solution for me is the white Titanium oxide pastes and the best one I found is by Aubry Organics. They don't advertise it is waterproof but the 25 SPF one lasts me 4 hours for surfing in the Hawaiian sun. Of course, my face is white but I am not making a fashion statement on the beach. (Some people add makeup color to the sunblock.)

I am feeling your pain. I went to the Millville Air/Car Show saturday and sizzle, sizzle. All I can say is ALOE ALOE ALOE. Works great.

A lot of waterproof sunblocks you still have to reapply ever hour if you don't go swimming and reapply after you get wet. It sucks. I used to have problems with that all the time.

Any "surf shop" should sell Bullfrog, and many sporting goods stores will as well. I've seen it in CVS in some shore communities. Be prepared for sticker shock ($10-$14 for a small bottle) but in the long run it's a small price to pay to minimize your cancer risk.

apoppin: sucks you're allergic to it...it works so well.
My mom gets a nutball sunblock from her dermatologist that has zinc oxide AND titanium oxide. It's more like pancake makeup than sunblock and you get it to match your skintone. Haven't tried it yet...I'm kind of afraid to.

aloe is the best. i had gotten sunburned so bad that blisters formed all over my arm and side of my face. use aloe and keep it moist. aspirin is the best OTC drug to take for the pain too...better than ibuprofen.
