Bad ps2 ports - Cure??

I have like 3 different brand mobos with bad ps2 ports and finally may have tracked down a bad keyboard that seems to have caused the problem. The last one was a brand new one, the other two are older. The keyboard has not caused all other mobos to blow out the ps2 port, but I am pretty sure it was the same keyboard that was hooked up to each of these just prior to the ports being blown.

I tried clearing the cmos, but no help. The newest one I am using with usb mouse and keyboard until I have to RMA, but my daughter will have to wait a while if I have to RMA it.

Any help anyone??

Thanks

Plugging and unplugging PS/2 keyboards and mice while the machine is powered up is a no-no. You'll likely burn out the keyboard and/or mouse, and in many cases, burn out the ports as well.

Did you unplug them while it was running? Try powering down the box, take a new or otherwise good mouse and/or keyboard, plug it in, and power up. If you are lucky, perhaps you only burnt out the devices, and not the ports. That's step a. If neither port now works, you may need to use USB keyboard and a serial mouse.

There is a fuse in the 5V line to the PS/2 ports which sort of looks like a little resistor or capacitor but the symbol/part no. silk screened next to it will either have a tilde (~) mark or the letter F (for fuse) followed by a number (often F1) - there can be both the ~ and F#. Easy enough to test and replace if you're lucky. If you aren't up to it yourself, having a tech do it shouldn't cost too much. Have them replaced with the new plastic self-resetting types so the problem doesn't recur.
. As the others have said, plugging/unplugging PS/2 when powered is asking for it, so other damage may well have been done. The kbd controller logic used to be in a separate IC, but they are commonly integrated in the chipset now. If that is damaged, it's new mobo time.
. It is good practice to never plug/unplug anything when powered up even though it's supposed to be safe to do so with USB and Firewire - no sense developing bad habits now.

I had a MoBo with a bad weld on the PS/2 plug-in. I yanked it loose with my keyboard. The easiest solution is to run a USB kb/mouse.

Thanks, I have 2 bad boards to play with that have no warr. I may have been in the process of plugging in the keyboard when it started coming up on all three. I usually plug in the monitor, ps, keyboard and mouse. But when you plug in the power cable, sometimes the pc will start booting up on its own (without you turning on the power button). When this is the case, if I am in the process of plugging in ps/2 devices, then it could blow. I did not realize this and up until 6 weeks ago, I had never had a problem. I have been working on PCs about 5 years without problems. Thanks for the insite and I will see if I can replace the fuse and if nothing else will always plug in the power last every time.

Thanks
