Bad news for the SETI team

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I just talked to rleach2 and his manager told him he wants the SETI client removed from all of the PC's in the building. He's got between 40-50 clients running. His guess a know-it-all programmer complained to the boss when he saw the command line client running in the backround. He may be able to keep an handful of select clients running but his output will be cut severely. He will probably lose about 70 WU's/day. 🙁

As if that's not bad enough I will likely lose my work fleet soon. Our company is making big changes and one of them is moving the corporate office to my location. More PC's right? Wrong. They are moving the corporate LAN/WAN admin to the site as well. Coming with him will be the corporate PC/Desktop admin. :Q Yes, that's my current position. If I still have a job after the move is complete I will be reporting to one of these people and will probably have to remove my 27 clients. Should that happen I will lose about 70 WU's/day. 🙁

Unfortunately, this will cut the team's production by nearly 10%. We've got to make this up in new members and assimilations.

Rob 🙁

if it makes you feel any better, i talked to a few seti guys here at my job, they say they just do it for fun, and probly wouldnt care if they were on a team. Im not sure what rate Seti goes, but its like 3 PIII 700's that i know of so far that i can get signed up.

Robor that sucks but we'll overcome it.🙂

Train that would be great if you can get them to join, we need all the help we can get to keep our output up.😀 All of their existing wu's will transfer as well so it would be an immediate boost.🙂

Robor- I'm mostly worried about you and keeping your job at this point, my thoughts are with you my friend.🙂

If it will help keep up the TA Seti team spirit, I would like to direct you here. In this thread, Magicman mentions that he will possibly be rejoining TA in Seti soon!😀

Good Luck guys!😎

Osmo.

🙁
To much bad news here...
Whatever happens Robor, I hope you can keep your job. 🙂
10% is big, but we can find people to fill that in if need be.

Sorry to hear the bad, er, horrible news. 🙁

Thats a chance all of us work users take. The plug could be pulled at any minute just because a single whinner or corporate change. In the mean time, I'm still good to go. I will work on some more asslaminations. I've aready cranked up my output the past two weeks, but I'm far from being tapped out. I must be careful tho, the more machines I take over, the greater the risk I face of drawing attention to myself or having a cry baby complain. Right now my biggest fear is the traffic I'm putting on the network will get noticed by corporate IS. All the traffic from my division gets routed through their firewall. Right now, I have a pc sending/receiving seti data about every 20 minutes. What are the odds they will take notice? Any guesses out there?

yeah, i'm not worried too much about seti, i'm worried about your job. i'll keep my fingers crossed for you. we can make up the difference in seti.

Thanks for the support everyone. The worst part is the not knowing what's going to happen. They're making some big changes and they're making them fast. The good thing is they're bringing the company up to date in technology. The bad thing is they're bringing in a lot of their own people. All of the corporate IS people have been replaced. I'll been with the company 15 years (right out of High School) and could be let go tomorrow - it's happened at other sites and even in a few departments at my site. It's nothing personal, but length of service doesn't mean a thing right now.

Whatever happens I think I'll be okay. There are a lot of IS jobs in the area (Clearwater/Tampa) and I don't think I'd have a big problem finding another one. I've got a stable record (15 years), excellent reviews, and 4 years experience in IS. I do plan to study and see if I can get a few MCSE certs done before the end of the year. Right now I've only got Networking Essentials done. Can't hurt right?

Robor

Sorry to hear the bad news 🙁 ,I hope you manage to keep your job or find a new 1 quickly.
Good luck

Oh ,& of course we'll miss yours & Rleach2's output but at least your'll still be with us 🙂 ,& who knows what assimlations you may bring in the future.

Train

That would be some welcomed good news if you could get them to join ,maybe if they saw our forum with the stats & races etc they might get more interested in it?

Okay, deal: Home machine(AMD K-3 III 450) for SETI again(sucks @ RC-5 anyway), work machines RC-5. It's not much I can offer, but... you know. Did anyone say TeAm ? 😀

badthad, are you running setiQ?
if you are, just set it to only connect at noon. Then it could be disguised as a luchtime surfing break.

Major OUCH! 🙁

I don't have permission to assimilate any PCs at my workplace.. I can only build/upgrade my PCs at home and ask friends and colleague to join our team.

That's not good. 🙁

That is a good idea office boy. You could even set up several SETIQ servers set to connect at different times during the lunch break.

Robor
maybe you could go to the individual users of the computers and ask their permission to let you load SETI on? i doubt the other systems admin will mind so long as you have their permission. or who knows? maybe the new guy will be a SETI nut 😉

No big deal Tetsuo you're welcome. 😀
/me sets SetiDriver to priority High and is off for favourite TV show. 😛
/edit: see sig

Robor,

If you are let go, I predict that your next job will be full-fledged, head honcho network admin with 10 times as many systems and no wienies around to screw things up.🙂

Russ, NCNE

osmo: When you are the Admin I think that qualifies as permission. If you read my post I'm talking about after the corporate office moves to my site. 😉 When that happens I will no longer be in charge of the network, right now I am.

It's great to see other member pitching in to help make up the difference. 🙂
