Bad Motherboard?

I just finished building my second computer last night and I ran into a problem. I have a ASUS A7N8X-X and a AMD 2500+ @ stock speed with a stock HSF. I am also using some sliver Antec paste.

When I boot up the system it beeps normally like it should for POST. After that I go into to the BIOS. After about 10-15 seconds the monitor went off and then about 2-3 seconds all of the fans shut off. No beeps or strange noises, just silence.

I left it sit for about 20 minuets then I tried again. I went into the BIOS and looks at the temperatures of the CPU. It was reading around 90°C and once it soon hit around 96°C it shut off. I opened the case and pulled the heatsink off and it was all still very cool. It was no where near boiling like the BIOS said.

My only thought is that sensor is bad on the motherboard. Is this what you all think this problem is? Or is it something else?

The heatsink is cool since the heat isn't getting from the chip to the heatsink. Reapply your paste and make sure the heatsink isn't on backwards. Apply by putting a 1/2 pea sized drop in the middle of the core and let the pressure from the heatsink squeeze the paste to a thin layer.
