Bad load temperature of E7500

Hi,

Just upgraded a friend's CPU to the E7500 but I'm getting bad readings for load temp. Idle temp is around 46C (with ambient temp of 29-30C). As soon as I start stress-testing with Prime95 though, temp quickly jumps to 90C and steadily climbs beyond 100C (I stop the test as soon as it passes that point). Equally as soon, temp plummets to 60C and eventually returns to said idle temp.

I'm not happy with that temp. Is this a case of bad cooling, bad HSF seating, bad sensor or a combination of them?

sounds like the thermal compound needs to be replaced

reseat the heatsink? are you using a backplate or the pushpins?

That did it. I re-seated the HSF, re-applied the thermal paste and really made sure all pins are securely in place. Idle temp remains the same. Load temperature under Prime95 increases smoothly now and tops out at 80C. Do you reckon that is acceptable?

@Gillbot, the HSF is a push-pin type. Are there differences in thermal performance between the two types?

Replacing the pins with a backplate yields more consistent and better pressure.

Basically, all you do is remove the pins and use this with the backplate instead. It works on typically ANY heatsink as long as you can get to the screws. There's a writeup around here somewhere.
