Bad idea to force graphics card out of slot?

I really hate those stupid little clips that hold these cards in place, especially when the size of these cards make it insanely difficult to even get to the clip in the first place.

If I just forced this thing out of the slot, would that potentially cause damage?

Hummm, not sure what mobo this would be but it must be pretty bad if it forces you to "force" a card out of its slot.

My mobo, you just press a little tab with your finger that allows you to pull the card out.

And, yes, you could possible break something on the mobo, probably the latch that was holding it in place or worse. Id say if you were going to do it, be careful.

It's not so much the Mobo, but the gigantic cooler I have which leaves me no room between the cooler heat synch and the card itself, so I can't get to it from that side, and the card spans over two slots the other way, so I can't get to it from that side either :)

The right way to do it would be to disconnect the cooler, then get to it, but I'd rather not if I really don't have to.

These clips are the worst thing ever created, especially when I can EASILY pull the part of the card that is closest to the back of the case partially out of the slot with minimal effort. So it's not like that stupid clip is serving any useful purpose, I mean if it held the entire card in the slot, then fine, that would be something, but it can't even do that! :(

One thing's for sure, once I get this card out, easy way or hard way, I'm breaking that piece of crap clip right off. Should've done that when I bought the mobo in the first place.

Why don't you push the clip in with something thin like a screwdriver?

I can't even see it unfortunately, but I'll give it another try, the GTX 260 is just taking up too much space on the non cooler side of the case.

I'm pretty sure you can clip a piece of the pcb that makes it so you don't need to press the clip in any more.

I have a GTX 560Ti ant it probably weighs about a kilo. So personally I'd never remove the clip because I'm already afraid that my gpu might just fall out of its spot and hit the bottom ;x I hate the way it's in the air with all the weight pulling it down. The card is not even completely horizontal, but slightly twisted because of the weight. I can't imagine how cards like GTX 590 or HD6990 don't fall out.

Never had issues with clips holding cards in,took my time removing and reinstalling.

This topic reminds me of the older pentium 4 478 cpus if you worked on a older dell or hp and tried to yank off the heatsink it would rip the cpu out the socket cause of that tape like adhesive for heat transference if any.

Must have done that a hundred times on different computers and zero had issues...

Yes, blindly prodding around your Motherboard with a screwdriver is highly recommended!

OP, i know what you mean. On my board it's an absolute nightmare to access that clip. I wouldn't advise just ripping the card out though!

I always took those little plastic out of pci-e slots whenever I get a mobo.

no problems what so ever.

and muuuuch easier to remove cards and put them in.

Oh, there are clips holding the card in place? I was trying to pull out my 6870 the other day and the sucker just didn't want to let go, so gave it a little yank and heard a snapping sound :/

Thought I had broken something on the motherboard - maybe I have.

Don't do it. I did it once, tried to just pull the card out b/c I had a pci card above it, hiding the clip and ended up making the pci-e slot nonfunctional afterwards. Luckily, I had another pci-e x16 slot and I don't do SLI.

The clip is designed to work in conjunction with the case screw.

Unfortunately a big PCIe video card would probably come loose if you broke the clip off. I wouldnt trust it to stay, especially since i bump my ccase alot.

Like AGP, the PCIe edge connector is not physically well designed for video cards. What we need is a loosened form of compactPCI, PMC, or VPX. All those interfaces are much more robust.

Don't be a tool, he never said to blindly go poking his mobo with a screwdriver. If the OPs fingers are too fat to press the little latch then a screwdriver would help.

It's not like it's a secret where it's located at. That being said I'd remove everything I could from my board and the sides of the case before I'd even think about ripping anything apart. That just never works out well with electronics... D:

I had the same experience with my 280 yesterday. It's died on me so I went to rip it out, and I instinctively pushed down on that little clip and pulled the card out. To my dismay, I then realized my mobo you pull the clip up to release. All I managed to do by pushing it down was getting it jammed inside the fin array on the 280. Ended up just snapping the P.O.S. clip right off the slot.

A little angry at myself, but no major problems.

Well the other problem is that its one of these latches:

They just press down not from the side, if it was the one from the side I would've had a better shot at it.

Oh well, when the time comes, new BF3 Video card, I'll just try out some of these suggestions, and worst case scenario I'll have to take out the cooler.

Thanks!

Pushing a clip with a screw driver is not the same as blindly prodding. Geez.

they look like ram slot clips.
