A bit of a wet blanket has been tossed onto Google Music recently. We're not exactly sure when this policy went into effect (but we're pretty sure it's been a recent change), but you can now only de-authorize four devices from Google Music per year. (You can still have a total of 10 authorized to play.) This is one of those situations that generally wouldn't affect your "normal" user who has one or two phones, and maybe a tablet, and doesn't go around swapping devices every few weeks.

This wouldn't be a HUGE issue if it was per DEVICE but it is per INSTALL. So those of us who swap ROMs pretty often.... Google Music is now worthless. I just lost access to all of my music on my phone including both music I added and music I paid for (on sale)..... lame google lame.

Back to Amazon music I go I guess.

That is... a really odd decision for Google to make. I wonder what made them do it?

The RIAA or similar organizations they have deals with, I imagine. Microsoft has a similar limitation with Zune Pass.

Prob music industry? I'm sure it's because people could activate 1000 devices and deactivate and download the music to each device. I get that... but they need to tie it to ESN/IMEI if they want to do that.

Oh, if it's the RIAA then it makes sense... because it doesn't make sense.

What form of music piracy is this stopping?

Yep, so far Amazon is doing it best, imho. MP3 download + streaming wherever you can log in.

When you think about it, Amazon really is an amazing firm. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have $200 Android tablets that weren't entirely worthless, either.

I called the play store about it and she was very nice about it. Completely understood. I explained I have 5 devices and my phone is listed 5 times. She asked if I was rooted and that was why, I said partly because it also goes up from uninstalls and reinstalls and they need to tie it to IMEI or ESN. The person escalated, she said if she could she would have just removed the devices for me.

Thank you for contacting Google Play. It was a pleasure getting to speak
with you today. As promised, I'm forwarding all the information you've
provided to the rest of the team for further investigation.

In the meantime, if you come across any other information that you'd like
to pass along, please feel free to reply to this email. Your responses
will automatically be added to your case.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Well, see you Google Music. I'm not a fan of Amazon's app, but without this limitation, I'll be going that route.

I never cared for google's music app anyway. It's too hard to download purchased music to the device for use in another player.

And this is why I only buy music that I can physically keep in my possession and is available in a DRM-free industry standard format. You don't really own something if someone else controls your access to it.

While I don't disagree, play store has had a few good deals that I purchased with. Also, the google music app for android is >>>> over the amazon app.

I just buy and download to computer and transfer whatever I wanna hear to my Droid.

I always restore from Titanium Backup anyway. Good to know there is a workaround. :)

Well at least they responded quickly and suspended the deactivation limits while they work on it. Most companies wouldn't even bother going that far.
