Bad ghosting probs with PS2 on my Plasma TV

Wasn't really sure where to put this, mods can move it wherever.

Had a 50 inch vizio plasma TV for over a couple years now and the other night decided to hook up my PS2 to it. There was a DVD player connected before that had some weird very noticeable ghosting-like problems. It was an old DVD player so I figured it just sucked. PS2 does the same thing though, ghosting everywhere. The weird thing is I have a Wii on the same TV and it doesn't ghost, same with satellite TV and the Xbox 360, no ghosting problems. Tried S-video cables and component cables, both yielded the same results. I can't figure out why the PS2 is ghosting badly but nothing else (besides the DVD player the PS2 replaced). Any ideas? I've tried everything I could think of and couldn't get the ghosting to go away.

Does the ps2 ghost on other tv's? If so the video card in the ps2 might be shot.

If not, then I have no clue...

Same input on the plasma? Perhaps the display device has that ghosting problem on that particular resolution. It's a Vizio...shrugs.

Try the component cables again and make sure it's set to progressive scan (the PS2). Then check and make sure no stupid video processing features are enabled on the Vizio. It's cheap enough a TV that any "features" for picture quality more likely than not remove detail and introduce artifacts. First thing I did on my Emprex (Fry's brand) LCD when I got it was disable all the video processing.

My PS2 is old and doesn't have a progressive scan option. Doesn't seem like that would be the difference anyhow though...

Again I can't figure it out because nothing else ghosts (or 'scrolling image' as it's also known) except for the DVD player that was there before, and that DVD player only started doing that recently, which is why we replaced it. Ah well, I'll fool around some more with the PS2 later today.

Perhaps the main issue is that it's an aging plasma from a 2nd-tier manufacturer. Not sure why it seems to be PS2-only though, and with different connections.

My Samsung Plasma is just over 2 years now, and I've been noticing a good bit of IR these days. It goes away pretty quickly, but most significant with bright, high-contrast images. mostly from DVD/BD through PS3 over HDMI.

so you can hook up component cables and there's no progressive scan option? hmmm. I have an older PS2 but haven't hooked it up in almost 2 years (since I got the HDTV). only ever used RCA with it, though. It looked so awful through the new TV that I just shelved it.

I think the best advice would be to doorstop the PS2 and get something more worthy of your TV for a change ;)

I like playing PS2 every now and again. Lots of good PS2 titles. Could upgrade to a PS3 but all my games are on a HD and I got everything setup with PS2. I just start it up and pick a game from the list and it loads right up. Good stuff :

There should at least be an option for 16:9 instead of 4:3 aspect ratio. Maybe try some different settings on your TV for the PS2 input. You could try turning the orbiter/pixel shift/whatever off. You could try putting it in PC mode if it has one. Or just play around with some of the processing options. It's most likely due to some processing that the TV is doing and the PS2 doesn't like.

Try switching the PS2 to a different set of inputs, one that you know works properly for another device. The input you use for the PS2 and old DVD player may be messed up on the TV.

Also, do you mean COMPOSTITE, or COMPONENT inputs? Composite is the yellow RCA jack for video, plus any audio cables. Component are the seperate red, blue and green RCA cables, plus any audio cables. I ask because if you are using S-video and COMPOSITE, then they are almost certainly part of the same circuit on the TV, so switching between the two wouldn't change your problem, whereas S-Video and COMPONENT would likely be different circuits in the TV.

They were component PS2 cables from Monoprice. The weird thing is they just stopped working all of a sudden, though the component cable worked the first couple times we tried them (with ghosting, still) and just seemingly died all of a sudden. TV was showing no signal input. Then I switched it out with the old S-video cable and got a picture (of course ghosting still there...). I have tried different outputs also. Wii is on Component 1 and works perfectly fine, so I tried the cables in there, but still showed the ghosting on the PS2.

This is all pretty confusing. I don't know what the hell the problem is. We're RMAing the component cables but it's still going to ghost no matter what cables we use it seems. Maybe I'll try plugging the PS2 or TV directly into the wall instead of going through the powerstrip. But it all comes back to the TV having no other ghosting problems with anything else.

Cheap TVs have bad scalers so a lot of standard def content (your DVD player and PS2) will blur like crazy. My cheap LCD does this as well including some poor SD TV stations. Do you have a newer console that will play DVDs?

Well I don't want to get into a big TV argument but this Vizio has been fantastic for the past 2-3 years. It's gotten lots of use also :D - Amazing picture still. Best TV we've ever owned by a long shot.

Anyhow...can't figure out the PS2 problem but I got tired of messing with it so I'm still taking a break.
