bad gaming rig

Hi all i'm a newbie (kind of) so be gentle

heres my problem i have built this system for gaming but it sux at the gaming part

Abit a8n-ultra
Amd 64 x2 3800+
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS)
XFX GeForce 7800GTX Ultra Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
200gb SATA hdd
580w Hiper PSU

Newer games run slow and jumpy (games like nfs:mw, quake4, doom3)
Older games like UT or low graphic games like max payne run @60-80 fps but with minor jumps
i Get 4000-6000 when i use 3dmark05 or 06
i never get more than 40fps when i use fraps (no matter what resolution,with new games) although they feel a lot slower

It definately has nothing to do with AA or AF settings or vsynch for that matter

I have tried all combinations of drivers, directx is up to date.
i have tested a different mobo (asus a8n-e) different ram (bog standard) a different cpu (amd 64 3200+) a different gfx card (6600gt,I think) different hdd's (both ide and SATA) Different rom and floppy.

a funny thing happened when i unplugged the pci-e connector from my psu to my gfx card, when i booted up, the system said it was running the card in a low power mode as it wasn't connected to a power source. this i understand but shouldn't the cards performance drop considerably??? it never even dropped 1fps (in all games new and old)

As i haven't tested the psu could something this simple be the culprit or could the pci-e power connector on the gfx card be faulty??

any help guys,
🙁

no allthough it was a weaker card it still had the same stutter in games

i tested my card with a different cpu and ram aswell as my originall cpu and ram
i tested the older (still brand new) card with my ram and cpu and different ram and cpu

congras !! nice set up

how many fps are you getting with Doom 3 70fps 80fps... Do you have slow down in gaming? check your 12 V of your Power supplier and 3v. I know a lot of guys complaining for slown downs with the 7800gt but with BF2.

if your card is your bottleneck try to flash the bios....go to www.www.mvktech.net for a bunch of bios

My guess would have to be the power supply...

:thumbsup: Check the voltages with a multimeter if you have access to one.

580w Hiper PSU

Never heard of it. The wattage ratings on most PSUs mean very little, I find that a 550W will produce more power than the 450W of the same brand (for example) but that doesn't mean it makes more power than the 450W of another brand. What you're looking for is something like a PCP&C or Sparkle/Fortron.

@colonel
70-80fps in doom - i wish try 15-40 (mainly 15-30) its barely playable like most games
also i don't understand the voltage side of things.
This is all very new too me but i built the above pc by learning.(even if it does suck atm )
if anyone has any links about psu voltages i,d appreciate it

and it cant be my card bieng the bottleneck as i tried another with the same results

Exactly what result in 3dmark 2005 you have?

Have to be minimum 8000 on your conf.

NFSmw many people have lags on conf like you, i have. Its engine of the game crooked.
In nfsmw i have to good fps like min 40, but it lags sometimes like for a half second. I spoke on forums about this many peoples have the same, its engine of nfsmw crooked.

Crooked its from translator, its like not good broken, bad, not right. Yes?

engrish

1) If you have Cool 'n Quiet enabled, try disabling it in the motherboard BIOS

2) it is probably not a good idea to remove the PCI-E power plug from the card

3) set the memory voltage to at least 2.7 volts

4) you did install the motherboard drivers, correct? The nForce4 driver package from nVidia?

Donkihot: Where are you from? Your english is good, I couldn't even tell you were learning until you mentioned a translator.

Yes, that's what it means, but it's not the best word. Broken is fine.

thats low, my old 6600GT used to make 70fps, make sure your power supplier has 20A upi in your 12V rail. I will get you a link for that. I think there is no enough juice in the card

You said 'jumping'. Have you applied the Dual Core patches for windows? (From both AMD and M$)

Can you explain this patch youre talking about?

Microsofts dual core hotfix somewhere here

and

AMD's x2 patch that can be found somewhere here

I'm not so sure it is the PSU. Well, obviously it could be an unlucky bad example, but basically, I have that PSU, and it's been absolutely fine.

Also, my boss has that PSU, he has a 3700+ at 2.8Ghz, and an overclocked 7800gtx and he has had no issues whatsoever in games. NFS:MW apparently looks very nice. He also has 2 x 1Gb RAM, and an asus a8n-sli. Someone said Hiper are a bit more respected here in the UK, I don't know if that's true, but I've certaintly had no problems with mine. In fact, the rails tend to be slightly above rated voltage ( < 5%) apparently because Hiper expected people to be overclocking and to want that extra bit of juice.

hi all

right as for your questions ...

@Donkihot
latest exact result from 3d05 = 6104 :-(
( i should add this is demo mode)

@mechBgon

1) tried coolnquiet both enabled and disabled
2) heh i thought the card compensated so as not to damage itself best not unplug it no more
3) ?? i'm desperatley trying to learn about voltages etc, please bare with me on that part (time is the biggst factor)
4) of course, all drivers are correct and older ones have been tried

@colonel
lol atm my fx5500 is doing better than my 7800gtx and again bare with me on the voltages

@TrevorRC
I have applied both

thanx for this help very much, but any other ideas guys??

These are some psu readings from everest home edition while the pc was idle is there anyway of capturing them while running a game?

That core is pretty far off...at least I Think it was still supposed to be 1.5...I still think its the PSU

i believe the core on a x2 runs between 1.3v + 1.4v

anyhow i took the psu back and switched it for a new one(same make,hiper) but it made no difference, pc world stock the hiper and a jeantech. I don't wanna put a jeantech in because they sound cheap,but i may have to try.

Could it be the gfx card, does any one know of any tests i can do?
i'm gutted!

This happened to my brother's computer. He has similar specs as yours except for the ram, but his 7800 gtx was playing like an intel card because of something with the power supply. I think he forgot to plug the power cable into the video card or he had a low watt power supply and it underclocked his video card
