bad female drivers - fact or fiction ?

ok, another disclaimer - this is NOT meant to be sexist.

Most of us have heard the generalization that women are bad drivers. What are your takes on this?

I'll start. Keep in mind this is just my opinion, so try to be gentle 😉

I think women are generally safer drivers than men. My mom has been driving for 40 years and has never received a speeding ticket or been in an accident. Most men (especially young drivers, like myself), like to speed, which is not a great habit. I'm guilty of this myself. The only complaint I have about female drivers is that I notice when I'm highway driving that a LARGE proportion of people driving SLOW in the left/passing lane are female. I don't know why, but they seem to be oblivious of other vehicles trying to pass them.

Let the comments roll... 😀

Actually I think male and female drivers are pretty similar with 1 important difference: Female drivers are generally less aggressive. In my mind this probably means that females overall are safer drivers since they are less likely to do something stupid to one up someone on the road. Of course the woman in Alabama that shot the other woman over a traffic altercation shows that this generalization does not always hold true. 😉

I would have to agree with you on this one.... ALL of my past g/f's have be crappy drivers.... every single one.... Damn.. I know how to pick em 😉

I think female drivers are less likely to get in an accident, because they drive slower and less aggressively. However, they often are a pain in the ass because they often do stupid things like driving slowly in the passing lane next to another car.

We need to define worse here. Men are far more statistically inclined be be driving with their dicks and driving at triple digit speeds thus having very, very nasty wrecks.

Women on the other hand are far more likely to be in a fender bender, or in a parking lot bump and rub. One is far more dangerous, the other is far more numerous. Women may drive less slowly than men, but I find them to be far less attentive and alert, hence dumb accidents.

Actually, I remember hearing about a study on this. The results:
The average man drives more miles per year than the average women.
Men get into more accidents overall.
Women get into more accidents per mile.

You can guess my conclusion 😉

women + SUV = death to all others

I have witnessed a female driver in an SUV do 50mph in a blizzard, and proceed to smash into a light pole. I cheered.

Men are considered worse drivers because men have a better chance of driving while drunk. But, this can be attributed to women also. Women make the men drink!!

statistically, young males have the highest *self-efficacy* perception but are the most prone to accidents and reckless driving

In general I think female drivers take less chances than male drivers, but I also find that female drivers are less aware in general of surrounding road conditions. For example, if somebody is behind them and tailgating them, they would have no idea because they aren't aware of the cars around them.

I don't know if this is specific to this area, but some of the "soccer moms" in this area seem to drive very very fast and always in a rush causing them to driver dangerously with tailgating and cutting you off to get in front of you. Thats just what I've noticed in general.

The sad thing is.... I saw something simmilar, except the stupid biatch was going like 50 around a 40 MPH curve while it was snowing. I was like "cool" but then of course had to see if she was ok 😉

Nope, it's a myth... and has been studied believe it or not. It appears Asians or women or worst drivers because of certain cognitive processes. When you see a bad driver that is non-asian or male, you'll just dismiss it as some 'ass' or idiot. But when you see an Asian or woman driving badly, then you validate that belief with 'yeah, here's another one', and it becomes more salient.

um.. thats kinda true.. i mean... when im driving normal around town im "bad" because i can powerslide around corners on wet pavement... sure its not always pretty, but im practicing... i dont think a female could even handle doing it on purpose.. i've seen some females lose control in rain/snow and they end up nailing something.. i'd actually be able to have a better chance at recovering... of course i run the risk of nailing something in my practice runs 😀

besides, i can hold my gf's hand with my right hand, drink a pepsi with my left, and change lanes with my knees on a busy highway... so hah

ROFLMAO!! 😀

I'm thinking of making this my new sig... 😉

The only female driver I spend a lot of time riding with is my mom, & in general she's a good driver. Never had a wreck (except when some idiot ran a red light & hit her), never had a ticket. Hell, she's never even been pulled over for anything more serious than a tail light being out.

However...

She is WAY too timid, I'm constantly telling her to decide where she's going and DO it rather than hang back.

She is terrified of driving in the snow. Granted that's more due to inexperience with slick conditions, but she could really use some confidence when it comes to snow & ice. I've only driven in the snow once, but I was completely comfortable. It was actually kinda fun, except for the morons that insisted on travelling at normal highway speed in low visibility/slick conditions.

the best was when my mom first got antilock brakes... she stopped hard in snow, and the whole car shuddered as they automaticly went to work... she was like... "damnit, i have this brand new car and the brakes dont work already!" i was just cracking up

actually.. my mother got pulled over for drunk driving with a BAC of ZERO! shes that bad of a driver...

where's the study? got link?

Sorry, no link. These were actual psychological research studies, you won't find that many articles on the web. But i'll try to dig up some sources/abstracts later tonight or tomorrow.

BTW, this was in a stats course we studied this.

women are known to become unpredictably hysterical, easily panicked, and incapable of focusing attention. there is also a certain period of the month that they definately don't belong behind the wheel. 😉
