Sorry to burst your bubble, but Antec has product failures just like everyone else. In fact I have read several posts (on this forum) where a "true power" power supply popped and died.

still no problems with my ultra x-connect. it'sbeen running 24/7 on my htpc without a hitch.
it's a

amd 64 3000+ 754
msi k8n neo platinum
1 gig corsair xms
bfg 6800 gt
160 gig samsung hd
audigy 2 zs
2x happauge pvr 250
beyond tv 3.5

Bad hardware happens,i'm glad to hear they went out of their way to please you when all they really are responsible for is the psu. I've had antec, and other psus and the ultra x connect has by far been my best and most stable psu to date.

I have a 350w "unknow" brand (litterly unknown, came with my old case with no markings on it whatsoever, weighs less then 2lbs.

Ordered an Antec365w "true power" crapped out on me after a week, didn't have anymore cash to replace it. And didn't want to go through the trouble of RMAing it right away. I stuck the 350 back in, guess what? It's been running nearly 24/7 for 2 years now.

It's currently supporting this (moved it to the new comptuer): A64 3200(OC'd, 1 DVD drive, 1 CD burner, 2 sticks of Corsair XMS pro (OC'd), 2 SATA hard drives. and a 9800pro 256MB version.

Then there's the blacklight and all the other junk.

I don't know how i missed this thread but here it goes.

I bought an ultra x-connect psu in October.

My system specs are:

a64 3200+, 1 gig ballistix ram, 6800 ultra oc, dfi lanparty ut, 160 gig hdd and ultra x-connect 500 watts.

My system got operational on the 28th of October after I receive all the parts.

I was having power problems with my 6800 ultra oc, so I flashed my dfi and it solved the problem.

On the 5th of November, I changed my bios settings aggressively and didn't get the mobo to boot. So i reset the cmos and got it to boot. I set all the bios settings to defaults and booted again. Booted fine. Loaded win xp pro sp2 fine.

So I shut my system down and left for work. I came back later that evening from work and fired up my pc. It would start but the no post on screen. I checked all the cables to make sure everything is properly connected. I reset the cmos again and still no post. The lights on the mobo were on but the power led on the front of the case wont light up.

So I took the mobo out of the system and only place the cpu w/heatsink fan, ram, and still no beep, no power led.

At this moment I noticed that the nf3 chipset on the mobo is extremely hot. So hot, then if you touch it, it might peel your skin off.

So I concluded the mobo is defintely fried. What I still don't know whether my proc and the psu which happens to be Ultra X-connect are alive or not.

I have my mobo RMAed by newegg and its on its way.

Reading this thread makes me think twice about Ultra and I still don't know if my proc is alive or not. :(

I have a spare 250 watts psu and I can ask my friend to loan me a 330 watts psu before I proceed.

Wish me GL.

First off I am very soory to here that you and other's have had this problem. Second I very glad that Ultra was abel to replace and upgrade for you that is plain awsome.

If I built a System I would be very upset if this happened to me. But again I must say that it is awsome how they handeld your problem even though it took some time. You must look at what they have to deal with, you sound like you have a lot of background building a PC. I have only built five of them I cant aford to build one every year, but even someone with a lot of background can do somthing wrong that could cause a problem. I would think it would be dificult to determine items, actions or events that cause your motherboard, Cpu, ram, PSU or GPU to fry. Even though you have a lot of backgound there are many that build a PC that dont and they have to contend with that . With all the diffrent conditions that can cause a psu to fail I can only say that I am happy to see someone support it. I feel better seeing support for those that choose to build there system rather than buying a complet system from a vendor.

Never had a Ultra brand PSU that went, but I did have a couple of Enermax's and one Antec either go flakey or die on me, and I thought they were good brands. I certainly paid top dollar for them.

The only brand of PSU I even consider buying these days is PC Power and Cooling. They don't rate their products based on unrealistic temperatures and they use the best components. Their cable management is also beautiful. They are all black these days, and to me, look really nice as far as PSU can look nice, although they don't have neon lights inside them... They have 3 or 5 year warranties, and they are made entirely in the USA (including custom PCB's.)

None of this points to your power supply being a source of your problem. Why would you think twice about an Ultra power supply because your motherboard is dead?

The original post stated that the PC previously worked with another power supply and then would not even power up after the Ultra was installed. Your PC continued to power up, but did not post. Which simply does not narrow your problem down to being the same issue.

I have an Ultra X-Connect and I've been extremely happy with it. Normally I don't go for gimmicky stuff and the only reason I got this was because I got a great deal for it on the forums. I could care less for how it looks or its "modularity", but it has turned out to be a great performer. Rails are strong and very steady, running a 2.8c@3.5Ghz and an overclocked 6800 Ultra, doesn't so much as flinch no matter what I throw at it. Tested it with a multimeter and the greatest fluctuation was 1.5% on the +12v rail.

I can't say the same for the Enermax "Noisetaker" 470W that it replaced. In fact, all the power supplies I'ver ever used, granted they are all in the <$100 range, all of them, when under load, exhibit a noticeable drain. I can hear the fans slow down under load, and then rev back up when the load is lifted, usually the difference is very slight, but I can always hear it, and I had just come to accept that as "normal". With the Ultra psu, I can't tell the difference between load and idle, the noise of my case remains consistent.

I wonder what temperature the output ratings are measured at for this psu, 25C or 40C?

This thread makes you wonder who is at fault for a PSU that takes out other components with it. Should the PSU company be held accountable? What about the company that made the APC/Surge Protector that could have caused the malfunction? Why not the people who did the electrical wiring in your house? etc.

hmm, didnt read through thread, I got the jist of it at the start..

I'll add 2 things aswell:
X-Connect's cannot be sold in UK
Tagan (TTGI) are just as bad

I believe X-connect's are not PFU meaning they are not economically friendly which means they are not allowed to be sold under EU regulations.

Tagan, I had a similar experience. I have had 4 Tagan power supplies;
1st blew up as I plugged it in - also like you took hardware down with it
2nd DOA
3rd P4 connector a) plugged in wrong pins b) one pin not plugged in
4th as im typing this, all ok..

Now Tagan's customer service is worse, infact, maybe atrocious is a better word to describe it. I waited almost 4 weeks for a reply that was brief and unhelpful. They said the people I bought the power supply would exchange it, but the message carefully neglected to get around the the fact that my motherboard, DVD-rom, CD-rw, hard drive were now my new coasters. I sent another email asking what their stance on the hardware that their product had damaged was, and im still waiting for a reply 4 months down the road.

Oh and I also learn't Tagan's 330W PSU is not legal in Finland because the quality is that bad that it is unsafe

This whole ordeal kinda gave me some insight into things. No wonder newegg doesn't sell ultra psu's.

Today (Tuesday) is the last day of a sale at Fry's for an Ultra 500w p/s.
It is 55.00 - 50.00 mir.= five bucks + the original tax. This unit
is not the X-Connect, but the appearance--titanium(chrome) finish, dual
led fans and specs are about the same as the X. I bought one a few days
ago and have had no problems. It sells at tigerdirect for 84.00. It is the same
as the model 30950, but has the second fan on the bottom, rather than
the back. Best of luck to you all, thanks
BTW this is Fry's So Cal.--not sure about elsewhere

Umm.. Newegg doesn't sell Ultra because Newegg doesn't buy from the channels that Ultra is available through. Welcome to the PC industry.

And unrealhippie: I can't account for Tagan's customer service, but TTGI is not the same company. They may or may not have their power supplies made by the same company, but Tagan and TTGI are not the same company, so don't pool them together.

I'm sorry you've had one bad experience, but truth be told I've sold more TTGI power supplies at TCWO (R.I.P.) than Antec or any other brand and have had fewer RMA's, and TTGI never gave me an issue when I had the occasional defective unit.

Also, you mean PFC, not PFU. And any power supply these days have PFC, but not active PFC. EU regulations require ACTIVE PFC because it allows for cleaner power on the mains. Ultra's are PASSIVE PFC which has little to do with how the power supply performs on the DC side of the equation. The reason they weren't available in the UK immediately is because the active PFC's A/C voltage switching has a 20W overhead and Ultra didn't want to remark their power supply as a 480W or completely re-engineer the 500W, so they've opted for a 220W only model to be sold in the UK that meets EU standards and is still 500W, etc.

EDIT: Oh... and gu3: I latched onto one of those Fry's deals too. Nice PSU. Same as an X-Connect but w/o the cables. Don't know if I'd buy it at full price, but I've got the sucker LOADED UP and all of my V's are well within 5%. My fingerprints show up too easily on it though. Guess I'll have to actually keep out of my case and put the side panel back on. :)
