Ok I have a stupid question...
now when you get dsl to your house, is the ip address you get from the phone company you get the line from or is it the isp?

It kinda pisses me off that cox has port 80 blocked...

I want to do a little bit of hosting as a hobby, you know run a shell account service, e-mial for freinds, some small web pages, a file server... you know the basics. Now what would be the cheapest legal way to do that with something a bit faster than dial up....
 
I think it's from the isp since isp basically leases a group of ip addresses from the carrier. As far as providing the web services you want, if the services agreement says you can't, then you can't (legally) other than finding another broadband service provide that will let you.
 

So without the isp I am physically attached to the "internet" already, thru the phone company and then into a national backbone...

I just don't have the ability to be found because my computer is not located logicly? I have no address. Is this correct? Or is there a couple extra steps that have to take place that I am missing?
