I will undoubtedly get people flaming me for posting this but I could care less, since this is something you should consider with all of the ISP deals that are posted here for Comcast, AT&T and Verizon.

Though you may be getting a lot of bandwidth from these companies, you, as the consumer, have the right to know what these companies plan to do with your services. Since the aforementioned companies are gigantic telecoms controlling the Internet in this country, this is important and, quite honestly, a very cold deal.

http://www.savetheinternet.com/

This site has a lot of information on it regarding what is involved in this. I just started reading about it today and was pretty pissed off about it.

Congress is looking to get rid of Net Neutrality, which in a nutshell makes it so that there's no bound or limit from the end of the client's ISP to access something. Your ISP will access info from Google as fast Google can provide it, and the same for something that's a a smaller operation like Anandtech (smaller in comparison to Google).

In place of Net Neutrality is a bidding system the ISPs can implement. This makes it so that the companies that pay money to these ISPs will still have their pages load quickly, while others are intentionally slowed down from loading. The site is, of course, somewhat slanted on the issue, as not everything is a Bourgeious vs the Proletariat, but it's still something that can affect every one of you.

So, read this and consider what your money is going to with these ISPs. Read up on this, and if it pisses you off, don't sit idly by, write your congressman or woman.

If you already knew this, then don't thread crap, there's lots who don't (such as myself until today). And I certainly think it's applicable to Hot Deals given the number of posts regarding deals with ISPs.

If you know the rules, then why go and break them?

Please obey them in order to enhance your experience here.

I think that if the major ISPs implement the pay-for-bandwidth plan, most educated internet users will switch ISPs to smaller companies that support Net Neutrality. It is these educated internet users that drive most of the internet ecommerce and activity, so I think that if the big ISPs piss us off our pocketbooks will strike back. The only way this would work is if the providers (big telecoms) don't have to allow other ISPs access to their netorks, which is also being tried, unfortunately. The whole success of the internet (like the US) is based on freedom- freedom to innovate, freedom to compete, freedom of ideas and freedom to communicate. Take that away, and you have nothing.

I am a fairly saavy net user, and I have no clue whatsoever who I should be mad at when sites are slow to load etc.

If I could be sure of who it is that is slowing me down, I would gripe.

Here's a sample letter to send:

Congress must protect freedom and openness on the Internet by passing legislation to protect network neutrality.

The Internet is our most democratic medium. It has grown exponentially, fueled innovation and altered how we communicate. Network neutrality is the guiding principle that has allowed for these advancements.

Now, for-profit interests want to violate the principle of network neutrality in order to increase their own profit margins. They must not be allowed to destroy the free and open culture of the web.

I strongly urge you and your colleagues in Congress to support robust net neutrality legislation that prohibits network operators from blocking, impeding or interfering with any lawful Internet traffic or prioritizing any content or services.

Please act immediately to save the Internet.

Yep, I've been hearing about this off and on lately. I for one do not want to see this implemented. If it is, many of us may not be able to simply switch away, because there aren't always multiple ISP companies in an area.

BTW OP, I love your NS servers :D

K, it's an important issue. Still not a valid post for this forum.

P&N.

Perhaps we should just merge this forum and the video forum because of all the video card deals that are posted here.

I don't know, I like it here. I may not of seen it anywhere else. I think the reason for posting it here is valid enough.

do you buy internet service? do you see the deals here listed for internet service? do you like to know the details of what you're paying for and what you're supporting?

i feel completely justified in my doing so and no one else has complained. this is an important issue and has to do with where people here are spending their money. if you don't like what a company does you should boycott doing business with them, and that's exactly what this thread is about.

I think the reason he posted it here is pretty simple to understand. The use of the internet (whether we realize it now or not) is probably the hottest deal going - the deal that usurps all other deals. For PC hardware enthusiasts (like those here at the Hot Deals at AT), the info in this post is very relevant. It will affect our future Hot Deals. It will affect virtually every aspect of casual internet surfing and searching.

I would like for this post to stay because I frequent this section at least once a day, every day, as I'm sure others do as well. It brings this critical issue to their attention.

Would you hand out flyers about a women's rights march to people at a football stadium?

No. You know why? Because you're wasting an effort with an audience where the majority doesn't give a crap about it. So why don't you post in Off-Topic or P&N, where this belongs?

Just because you think it's important doesn't mean you should go against the rules of the forum to stand up on your soapbox.

If you have to start a thread with anything like "NOT HOT" or "COLD DEAL" it doesn't belong in here.

Just because some people don't read the other forums doesn't mean that it's okay to post in here. Some people don't read politics and news. Does that mean you should re-post news articles from there so people who only read hot deals can read them? NO.

It just pushes legitimate deals down further into the forum.

If you want to "save the internet", maybe you should take the first step in trying to follow commong practices of internet forums by posting in the right forum.

And for the record, I don't give a damn.
