i dealt with a similar problem to this about a year ago with at&t for 6 months straight and they never resolved it. dealt with their excuses for way too long. after 3 cable modems and 6 on site visits it got a little ridiculous. and then they refused to give me a discount or refund me for any of those months. It took another 4 months or calls and non payments for them to take it off.

Narzy,

Just curious if you have the tools/ability to "ping" the cable modem directly from Comcast's cable network? Should be able to tell you if it's on his end for sure. I guess plugging just his PC directly into the cable modem is close enough though.

and try varying packet sizes with the ping. 64 bytes one time and 1400 bytes the next, or even better sweep the range.

Kinda sounds like a bad card in the head end?

Does comcast have a particular MTU size that they use?

Verizon DSL uses 1492 or some such odd number.

If comcast does something like that and the linksys router this computer is behind wants to use 1500, and if the auto-negotiation fails...

Well, just a thought.

sorry I've been out of town dealing with family issues and haven't had time to stomp on this case, I have a load of work to catch up on when I get back in on monday, but once I'm caught up I'll get back on it if thats ok, I know its annoying as hell but I only have about 14 awake hours per day ;).

Well I did finally get some one out at the house who seemed to know a little something. He checked at the box out side and it seemed the ping was out of whack. He said it should of been at a max of 51 to our house and it was at 45 so that would make our modem have to work extra hard to get a good signal. At least that's what I seemed to remember him saying. Does that sound right?

He also said he was going to put in a request for an engineer to come out and check the line. He said that maybe an amplifier might of been bad...

This guy just out of the blue called and then showed up so I guess all those times I called some one must of noticed a ton of open tickets or did you tell them to get out their and help me out? ;)
