He ran down Troy Polamalu on a 49-yard interception return in the third quarter by grabbing the All-Pro safety by his long hair. Johnson whipped Polamalu to the ground out of bounds along the Chiefs' sideline, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and touching off a brief skirmish.

"The dude had hair, what was I going to do?" said Johnson, whose neck was injured last week by Arizona defensive back Antrel Rolle's horsecollar tackle. "That was the only thing I could get my hands on."

Just to clarify that it is legal to pull hair...

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/sportsline/main9204506.shtml

The NFL declared that the hair is part of the jersey and is legal to grab on and make a tackle. Why was this a penalty? Not sure if it was because he was out of bounds, but from what I've read and seen on ESPN it drew a flag because he tackled him by the hair.

the jersey is now illegal to grab as well fyi... you can get a horse collar tackle, even if you only grab the jersey.

The jersey is illegal to grab? I'm pretty sure 90% of all tackles are made by grabbing the jersey somewhere. ???

He got the penalty for pulling him up by the hair, which you cannot do.

It all depends on how high up you grab. If you grab the bottom of the jersay you arent likely to get called for a horse collar tackle.

To me it sounds like the penalty was for a horse collar tackle.

He got called for a horse collar tackle more than likely.

no, you can grab the jersey, but the rule was changed so that the officials dont have to decide if the player grabbed the shoulder pads, or the jersey. if you come from behind, you can not horsecollar tackle them, it's EXTREMELY dangerous, thus the hair being part of the jersey, would be right where a horsecollar tackle resides, thus illegal.

The announcers in-game originally said for the hair pull, but a play later said the penatly was for taunting (unsportsmanlike) and that the hair pull was not a penalty.

I guess you don't understand who we're talking about. Troy Polamalu has hair down to his ass and it's everywhere.

yeah, you can.

if it WERE illegal, i'd imagine all runningbacks and receivers will let their hair get long and hang out of their helmets to give them an advantage... if they get tackled by their hair, 15 extra yards.

i'm pretty sure it was nadjeh davenport or someone else who got tackled by the hair last season and the refs, announcers, and espn all said that hair hanging out of the jersey is to be treated like a jersey and the player wears their hair out at their own risk... they even referenced ricky williams getting tackled by the hair a couple seasons ago.

yes, but in this case, it became a horsecollar tackle, the MOST dangerous tackle in the game. thus, illegal.

if he had pulled him to the side, forward, etc, legal

horsecollar, illegal.

To clarify that the horse collar rule has nothing to do with this.

"The horse-collar tackle is an American football tackle in which a defender grabs the back inside of an opponent's shoulder pads and yanks the ball-carrier downwards, a technique which has been used for decades."

From wikipedia. The rule (and nothing I've read anywhere) mentions anything about hair.

but that rule does not require the grabbing of an opponents shoulder pads anymore, if you grab his jersey, by that area, its illegal as well.

as happened in the NOLA game to reggie bush.

the only way you can legally horsecollar someone is if you grab their jersey first, i believe... or if you put your hand on their shoulderpad before you grab the horsecollar. you can't grab the horsecollar first... that's illegal. i'm pretty sure that it's legal as long as you grab the horsecollar second (unless you grab the facemask first hehe).

Wrong. When the horse-collar rule was enacted, you had to drag them down by the INSIDES of the shoulder pads. Now that rule applies to the INSIDES of the jersey as well. You can still pull on the oustide of the jersey to pull them backwards...or in any other way as well.

 Don't normally side with you, but it looks like the NFL did unfairly call this :)

What really made me mad when I saw this on sportscenter was that I've been waiting (and I especially don't like the Steelers) for somebody like Troy to get yanked down by the hair since it's been specifically stated numerous times that it's legal...and then to see a flag thrown!?!? I was livid.
