I have a feeling that increasingly strong box-office SALES has less to do with actual audience turnout...

... and more to do with rising ticket prices :confused:

While this is true, there was also a huge explosion (no pun intended) of multiplex theatres in the last decade. The presence of many more screens per theatre means that theatres can stagger their showtimes such that (barring sellouts), there are showings of newly-opening blockbuster movies pretty much every hour on the hour, which greatly increases the number of people who can see a film on opening weekend. Yes, it's pipelining for audiences.
