Gotcha...

i thought your *point* was that theres no merit to allowing yourself to come into contact with germs.

i don't buy into this backlash, i went to the dentist recently and I have moderate gum disease and bone loss, which is directly attributable to bacteria in mouth. The dentist made it a point to that I should use specifically listerine and rinse for atleast a minute when i do to kill bacteria.

most people here are not medical professionals so everything with a grain of salt.

If your logic were to follow everywhere, then anything with risk would be avoided, regardless of return on that risk.

If you shield your self from bacteria your whole life - what happens if you're thrust into a group of 8 year olds? Odds are, your non-existnt immunity to germs will be overpowered in about 7 seconds.

That is a ridiculous strawman, i said nothing of the sort. That is like saying this thread means everyone should bathe in sh*t and sewage to build up immunity.

It depends and I am just saying most of you are not doctors and not to read too much into this sort of article.

obviously i know nothing about your situation, but perhaps had you bathed in sewage, you wouldn't have gotten your disease and bone loss because your immunity would be stronger 😛

Listerine is different, though. It's not an antibiotic per say; it does kill bacteria, but in a chemical manner (breaking down walls of the bacteria). This effectively means it kills everything, so nothing can develop an immunity to it and it's not plagued by the problems of resistance that antibiotics are.

Focus team.

- Eating yogurt may do you some good
- Rolling in ****** probably won't
- George Carlin is not a real doctor

sanitation is good, washing hands is good

the concern here is using antibacterial products which are mostly unnecessary and may lead to resistant strains

wash your hands with soap, regular soap, thoroughly and completely, its the action that disinfects, not the special additives

im not a doctor, yet

It worked for George Carlin.

You could always lick the toilet rim for a bacteria top-up, although I would advise against it.

I would advise against it too, but toilet rim doesn't have much bacteria, (unless someone poo'd on it ) compared to door handles for example 😛 Bacteria like warm temperatures + urine doesn't have any bacteria. Sure it would be nasty, but that's not the best way to get bacteria

Shopping cart handle FTW.

Disinfectant of course. I've always wanted to try that. Put the strongest rum I can find on a wound and see what happens.

Sure, after you run it through another round of distillation or two to raise the ethanol level to ~ 70% by volume then sterilize the effluent at 121 C for an hour or so.

I am not a big hand washer, either. I haven't been sick since August 2006.

Same here but I haven't been sick since like...2002 or something? And then it's gone in 24 hours. The last time I was sick and it lasted more than 24 hours I was in 6th grade with Pnemonia.

Our body is full of good bacteria that help us out or just hang out with out hurting us. Broad spectrum antibiotics as well as regular everyday stick antimicrobials in everything philosophy kills off all our bacteria friends. This lets the disease causing bacteria to come in and have a party, the mess of which ends up in our pants.

BTW... it is often referred to as the Normal Flora theory. The good bacteria is more successful at living in our bellies. They compete with bad bacteria and win. We stay healthy. We kill good bacteria or raise their rent or stop taking care of the building ... bad bacteria starts to move in and then there goes the neighborhood.

To replenish your body with good bacteria, a good dosage of probiotics (as opposed to antibiotics) will help your digestive system get back to normal.

National Geographic had an article about this... citing study that show that people that grow up / live on farm have stronger immune systems and are significantly less prone to allergies...ya da, ya da...

I believe it... throughout millions of years of evolution man has lived 'close to the earth' (,lived dirty,, practiced 'poor sanitation') and now, in the last 100 years, we are changing all that.
