this is not grocery shrink ray due to profit mongering

1) beef prices skyrocket cuz US drought + increased worldwide demand. low supply + high demand = higher prices. this has gone on for many years now, and it takes several years for a cow to become a steak on your table
2) bacon prices skyrocket due to pig disease

The price of pork for shoppers could rise by 10 to 12 percent as a virus that has killed millions of piglets continues to ravage swine across the country.

The National Pork Producers Council said Wednesday that U.S. hog prices could rise 15 to 25 percent, which would translate into a price rise of up to 12 percent at the table.

thank the Chinese and their pig viruses killing off the world's piglets

Tis the danger of big agro farming. Big yields, big potential to have the entire lot lost due to disease of some form.

For years they were getting away with it and everyone thought you can farm like that forever. Antibiotics on cattle/pigs raised under conditions that would normally make them sick, well guess what, surprise! Its a virus this time.

Its really only a matter of time until some pest or pathogen evolves to take out soybean/corn as well. By raising a monoculture, the same exact DNA year after year, you have essentially held evolution still, which is much like a treadmill, everything is evolving in small ways all the time. You hold evolution still and the pests and pathogens keep evolving, yeah, its only a matter of time until they are completely wiped out. One plant being susceptible and they all will be susceptible. Its so irresponsible.

Wonder if this means my Bacon Of The Month club will cost more next year when I sign up. It's already $190 for a 1 year "subscription"

I noticed the opposite trend. Bacon prices was high last year. This year, it's actually lower at the stores I shop and there are more sales on bacon. Bacon prices have dropped at Costco.

But beef prices rose. Trader Joe's increased their 80/20 ground beef prices from $2.69/lb every day to $3.99/lb. That's like 50% increase overnight. And choice ribeye at Costco has been steady at ~$10/lb for the past 6-9 months. And shrimp prices spiked and haven't come down. Same with scallop. King crab prices are down though. After couple years of $20-$25/lb, it's now ~$16-$20/lb. I bought a 20 pound box couple weeks ago and only paid little over $15/lb. Last time it was that cheap was like 8 years ago.

Yea the prices are getting silly, for bacon still worth it though.

The tricks being played with shrinking package sizes down, but doing it in a manner that is uniform so as to make the change difficult to spot is a damn travesty. Note how thin cereal boxes are getting and they've also gone full retard on the 1/2 gallon of OJ, now 59oz...

With all the BS going on I now support Food Stamp programs and wish they'd up the level for which you can get them.

Fuck pork - it's disgusting.

I eat beef now and then. But, generally stick to chicken, turkey, tuna or salmon.

I don't mind the smaller 59oz OJ because the prices have been low for months now. There must be glut of orange supply because orange juice is always on sale at the supermarket. I can't remember the last time I paid more than $3 for 59oz.

I've always found bacon to be pretty expensive. Still, usually worth it if you get the good stuff.

$5-$6 /lb is expensive? For meat, that's pretty inexpensive. Most people can't eat a pound of bacon. So you're only looking at $1-2 per serving. That's a deal. Compare that to something like king crab legs. Most people can eat a pound or two. And probably half the weight is the shell so it's really like $40/lb for the meat. I would say that's pretty expensive.

I never said it was $5-6 per pound here. I honestly have no idea what it costs per pound up here, I just have always found it to be a bit expensive.

I agree, it's something we just do for BLT's a couple times a month here really these days.

The cheaper bacon shrivels to nothing.

Another thing causing the big jump in price was the drought in the past. As grain prices went through the roof for farmers, and as there was less forage on their land, they downsized their herds, leading to lower prices for a while. Now that grain prices are lower, they can rebuild their herds. They don't just grow on trees, you know - One cow = one calf. You can't increase your herd size, unless you keep animals. Thus, it takes a higher price to entice more farmers to sell more animals.

Beef prices have gone up too.
Paid $4.39 a pound for brisket at Costco in March. Last night bought another one and it was $5.49 a pound.
Last year I was paying under $4 per pound for it ($3.69 to $3.89).

hm.. never looked at brisket. only ribeyes.

but ribeyes are $9/lb.
might start doing brisket in a crockpot/bottle of bbq sauce and nothing else
