Laptp bit the big one, had to redo everything.
Only bought the cd/rw for the internal part of lkaptop

Looking for an external dvd drive for backup, probably usb, so it is compat with other computers I have - including my mom's...

Looking at the plextor 712 (not the latest, but $158. is a good price vs $250. for the 716...
any otherideas?

Thanks!

How afraid are you of sticking a DVD drive in an external enclosure? The process should not take longer than 15 minutes, and then you can reuse the drive in a desktop if you ever feel like it. It might not look as pretty, but it will be a lot cheaper.

Anyways, I would go with a:
$33 5.25" External Enclosure
$39 OEM DVD Burner, with Nero

This totals to about $72, and shipping should not be over $10.

Thanks for the reply.
My Waterloo is spending too much time messing with building things and messing with the computer stuff :->
NEVER seem to get anything done = like work!

Bought a refurb Plextor DL 16x external DVD, all delivered for $158.00

Hooked it up to the laptp fine, but Norton Ghost 9.0 burps about 2/3 of the way through with a 0xE7D1001 error - 'can't write to a file'
Am going to try to scare up a copy of some other backup software that works well with an external DVD. Should have bought the stinkin DVD writer for the laptop in the 1st place instead of the CD writer.
(Acer Travelmate 8000)

Thank you for the help!

I would have just bought an external hard drive. External HDD's are incredibly useful in the first place and are great for backups.

I may just to that anyway. The external USB drive and software are being tempermental. Im have a couple of 40 gig HDD around and may be better off just doing that!
Thanks for a good idea!

Be wary about what external enclosure you buy. The chipset in some of them are not compatible with pre-OS image tools. For instance, I have a Vantec Nexstar 3 enclosure and Acronis TrueImage boot CD will not detect it. However it works fine with my Seagate 100GB USB.
