Backup software...

Anyone have any experience with domain-level backup software? I'd like the software to sit on the server without client installations and backup in a routine manner to a disk local to the server or to a disk on a NAS. Any help would be appreciated.

Backup Exec....One of the easiest interfaces, and very simple to administrate.

Isn't that a client-side application? I'd like a piece of software that sits on the server and handles the clients on its own. Right now I have Cobian configured and it does a pretty good job, but I'm looking for something a bit more robust and on an enterprise level.

Pretty much all backup software is going to want an agent on the client.

If you do not put an agent on the client, what protocol is your backup server going to use to access the files? CIFS/SMB? Cifs is very chatty and your throughput will suffer. By using agents you are able to stream files much better to the server. You can also use compress for the transfers is needed.

Based on what I preceive as your current knowledge of backing up a windows enviroment, I too would recommened Symantec Backup Exec. It is likely to be the cheapest and easiest for you to use while still being a business class solution.

Commvault Galaxy, Netbackup, Networker, Tivoli Storage manager and SyncSort would all be too difficult and likely too costly.

Use TSM at work, do not recomend it for being easy to use or configure, but technologicly speaking I highly recomend it

Yep...

The problem is that he should be using an agent on the client anyways, or as was said, its going to be "chatty".
