I want some backup software, i have used ghost and driveimage in the past and they were ok, not the best IMO.

Needs to be compatable with linux and MS filesystems(NTFS, EXT 3, EXT 4, JFS)

Needs to be able to make complete image including MBR to USB attached external drive.

Needs to make uncompressed backup, the idea would be to make a image of the boot drives on my desktops(500GB drives) onto 500GB external drives, and in the case of a drive faileure i would remove the drive from the external enclosure and install it in the desktop till i RMA/replace the drive, drives would be the same brand/model/size.

What do you suggest.

Heya,

Some wonderful people here in this forum got me into Fbackup and I've been using it a lot and like it. It's very easy to use. You can backup locally, over networks, to/from externals, etc. You can choose whole drives, just folders, mapped network locations, etc. You can mirror or do full backup. Mirror just updates files that change (or new files) but doesn't re-write the files that are unchanged (as it's not necessary). Full backup re-writes each file regardless of it changing or not. I use mirroring on several multi-TB drives.

Or, use acronis true image to make image backups of disks if you want and then store the images on external drives.

Personally I like Fbackup better. Instead of dealing with images of disks, they're just open disks that you can use in any system and on any computer without special software. It's like having clones of drives. One fails, well, the other is just like it, so you use it or restore it to a new drive, etc.

Very best,

It seems Fbackup does not support linux, thats fine as long as it can be run from a boot CD and still supports linux filesystems, is that the case?

you can download a trial, and acronis is linux based so it should work with linux, also newegg can sell it as a download.

another vote for True Image. Not entirely sure about linux, but it does let you make a boot CD and will do a bit-for-bit copy with or without compression (slightly compressed is default)
