I know time machine does a backup, but I want to be able to backup the whole partition, so when I do a restore to another drive, it will boot. What's a free or cheap solution?

I would second the recommendations for Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, get the job done in a nice, user friendly, GUI.

if you just let time machine do its default thing. And one day have a problem with install you can use time machine to restore to last time machine backup?

I like time machine but man it uses alot of space. What happens if it runs out of room and deletes an old file with no other copies? Or will it do that? I really have snow running the way i want and spent alot of time in iphoto, other apps and dont want to lose that work.

Tried SuperDuper before, backup was not bootable.

Real Mac or Hackintosh? If Hackintosh, you need to install the bootloader to the cloned drive after cloning.

Is this what you mean by installing bootloader (These are directions from chameleon)
"
Suppose that your installation is on /dev/disk0s2
- Install boot0 to the MBR:
sudo fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0

- Install boot1h to the partition's bootsector:
sudo dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2

- Install boot to the partition's root directory:
sudo cp boot /
"

I would prefer to use boot camp if thats possible? I want to clone partition for a test install.

well i just used carbon clone a few times now. One to create a backup test install of snow. Was really easy and didnt have to do anything extra, but i use a separate partition for chameleon.

I also want to format my drive so i cloned install to another drive and it worked perfect too. But I did have to reinstall chameleon to the new drive.
