Backup dvd to Xvid?

I want to start backing up my DVD collection to my HD. This would mostly be for strictly archival/backup purposes but it would be nice to be able to stream these to a tv via a pc in my entainment center. From reading on dvdrhelp.com Xvid seems like the most versitle choice as far as quality, size, and portability. Before I did this I thought that I'd run it through the ATOT braintrust. I don't want to have to change formats and rerip everything.
