I took the backplate off my motherboard for my thermalright 120 extreme because I'm getting a new motherboard. Well the sticky foam ripped off the backplate and stuck to the motherboard. I had to scrape it off. Now my question is what can I use to replace the sticky foam adhesive that was on their? Double sided foam tape etc any ideas????

i think a good idea would be to get the rest of the sticky foam off with a hairdryer by heating up, then using a cutout of thin cardboard in between the backplate and mobo to take the place of the foam. there is no point in sticking the backplate the the mobo

The foam is too far gone to save. So I have to think of some alternative to put on the backplate now :-(

vinyl or electrical tape maybe ? sticky side away from the board since the adhesive eventually loses viscosity and you dont want that mess on the board.

Bottom of white foam cup.

Thin Cardboard is probably just as good.

Cork like they use on headers.

Last time we moved we got some thin foam sleeves to pack china plates in from the U-Haul Place.

Doesn't styrofoam have a low flashpoint? That is obviously a very hot location.

Well, I don't think you have to worry about styrofoams flash point since it is well above 300 deg C (Link).

But I would avoid it simply because it softens around 60-90 deg C (depending on grade) and the foam would probably collapse.

A lot of people struggle with this adhesive backing and most around here seem to prefer to not use it all together for the very reason you have encountered (it doesn't come off). Of course, everything works fine without the adhesive except that you usually need to eother take the motherboard out of the case or have access slots in the motherboard tray every time you want to reinstall the HSF.

If you're interested in a little tinkering, here is a thread I saw recently that describes a way to use cardboard instead.

Thanks for the link. I just remember how easily stryfoam goes up in flame around a campfire. It has been awhile since I have been around a campfire though. That brings back some good memories.

That is exactly what I used, just cut them to size so you have 4 edges, no problems.
