The circle of paradise for me includes southern Germany, Austria, northern Italy, southern France, and Switzerland. Pretty much anywhere surrounding the Alps or on the Mediterranean ocean.

So, my favorite cities/regions are...

Berlin, Germany
Cologne/Düsseldorf, Germany
Nürnberg, Germany
Black Forrest Region, Germany
Alps Region, Austria (Hallstatt)
Alps Region, Switzerland (Interlaken)
Northern Italy (Bellagio on Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Rome)
Entire French Riviera
Spanish Islands (Ibiza)
Greek Islands (Santorini, Naxos, Corfu)

I have never been east of Vienna, nor to the BENELUX countries, nor to the UK. I have been to Denmark and Sweden, and despite going there in July/August, it was cold and rainy! If I'm traveling in Europe in the summer, I want hot weather!

The top five would really hinge on what it is you are interested in. If you want to see all of the "touristy" stuff, obviously Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid and London have to be on the list. If you are more inclined to get off the beaten path, then Prague, Antwerp, the Bordeaux region of France, and Luxembourg City are all worthy of consideration (among many others).

Just in case you haven't already noticed, there were some other users asking the these or similar questions.

(And this two topics more specifically deal with Switzerland)

You'll find many suggestions there. Italian is different from German, it's more similar to french but still quite different. But language shouldn't be a big obstacle in Italy if you learn some basic vocabulary (food!). The average Italian may not speak that much English but hotel personel and other people in the tourism business do.

It's always nice to encounter some events on a vacation, especially if it is a long one. If you should decide to visit Switzerland, here are some events in your timeframe. There also are many Open Air festivals in Switzerland and elsewhere in June-August.

June 16-18 Festival Tropical Caliente, Zurich
South America-themed city festival.

June 24-26 Albanifest, Winterthur
Another multi-cultural city festival. Small amusement park, much party and other stuff.

August 1st National holiday, many places
Fireworks in some cities, special traditions in others.

August 2-12 International Film Festival, Locarno
Open air movies (reservation recommended) in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. Locarno is a beautiful city, too.

August 13 Street Parade, Zurich
One of Europe's biggest two techno music processions for all who like electronic musik, naked skin or are looking for an excuse to party two nights without a pause.

September 11-13 Knabenschiessen, Zurich
I know this is after your timeframe (but then again, Zurich is only 40km south of the German border). Switzerland's biggest kermis (not saying that Germany lacks them) with tons of food stands and the traditional army rifle shooting competition for all 13-17 years old residents.

Switzerland aside, so far I've travelled to and really liked Vienna, Copenhagen, Rome, Florence, Barcelona and Ljubljana.

</hostel>I know this place near Slovakia where the women are beautiful and they will do ANYTHING. Because all of the men went away for the war, they are hot for foreign men, especially American. Just go east. Oh yea, make sure you pick up a wanderer by the name of Olie from Iceland. <Hostel/>

P.S. The children are vicious, if ever approached by a gang of them make sure you have money or a bag of candy with you. You never know it may save your life.

Also beware of people with a bloodhound tattoo!!!:Q
