Backpacking lanterns

Gas powered, of course.

Is there anything more high tech than fabric mantles? They're too fragile.. they suck.

We picked up a couple propane powered single mantle models, they were on sale for 10$.. lol. As you can imagine, they're pretty crappy.. So I want to look into some better, cooler models.

They suck down the gas fast, but they are decently bright.

Meh, I never took a lantern backpacking. Too heavy and not worth the extra weith IMO. Coleman makes some good ones though I have been told. You might want to check those out.

lol, there has to be something other than Coleman.. as good as they are and as much as I love them.

Heh, this is the exact one we got.

for backpacking you need one of those little, mostly useless, candle ones

otherwise, one of the old 60's colemans that runs on liquid anything

Why not a battery lantern?
Batteries are heavy and die quickly. We've done the battery lantern thing.. gas works better.

8D cells weigh more than a propane canister, but probably take up less space.

Edit: We bring a battery lantern and/or flashlights for in the tent.

The candle ones are what I used when I was a younger man and still backpacked. They are light and provide enough light in the tent.

I never used a lantern for backpacking, just a flashlight for the tent, and we just make a camp fire if we need light, (we do carry a small propane torch to help light the fire...easier than working with possibly damp kindling)
