I got in on one of these deals a few months ago, and the motherboard did have an integrated LAN. I am guessing that this combo also does, even though the link says that the onboard LANis optional. Onboard LAN, seems to be pretty much standard these days.

I am guessing that the motherboard is an ECS K7VTA3 or something similar:

I can't remember an ECS motherboard made in the last few years that didn't have onboard LAN, and that's going back to the K7S5A boards. I can't find an ECS board that doesn't have onboard LAN here, unless of course it's not an ECS board you're getting.

There's only one ECS motherboard that uses VIA® KT333CF & VT8235 chipsets according to Outpost web specs and that's the K7VTA3 v 8.0.

They have been pretty good. They are a bit slow in responding to emails, but their telephone reps have been nice and helpful.

Frys in Webster, Houston had some combos with KT-266 chipset.
I didnt look at them to see if they really were KT-266 though.

This is a good base to build a system for a relative or something for web, email, etc. Better yet, buy the Mushkin dual channel memory from Newegg (in another hot deal thread) and you can build TWO nice systems with 512MB of memory. :D

Thanks for the heads up...

Stupid question, that seems obvious, but just wanna make sure, is it safe to assume that assuming decent video card, etc, this combo will stomp on my kt133a/Athlon 1400 combo for HL2? Been pondering an upgrade on the cheap, and this looks like it may be what I was looking for.

It should definitely be a boost. Just be aware that you will need DDR RAM for this (PC2100, PC2700, etc.).

FYI anyone thinking of building a basic computer with a sempron, go for it!

I just built my sister a pc with a Antec SLK3700 case, Shuttle AN35 mobo (lan+sound), 1x512 MB Corsair Value Select PC3200, and an AMD Sempron 2400+ and it runs Win2K very well. I had a spare 9200SE, but you could get an integrated graphics mobo and save even more. It's be slow encoding movies on it or playing any processor/gpu intensive game, but everything else I could think of ran at fast enough speeds.

My Sempron deal came in today. The motherboard that I received did have the onboard LAN.

There are two combos at the outpost site for $75. One combo has the kt333 board, and the other has kt600. Which is the better board? I know that kt600 board has the later technology. Can I use pc2100 speed ddr on a kt600 board?

I do not know if the Kt33 or KT600 is better. The KT600 says this:
# 3 x 184-pin DDR DIMM socket support up to 3GB ( DDR400 up to 2GB )
# Support DDR400/333/266 MHz 2.5V DDR SDRAM

Since DDR266 is PC2100, I am guessing that you should be OK. However, you always want to check RAM and MOBO brand for compatability because some chipsets are picky about what brands they will take.

Thanks Timswim78 for the information and the pointer about the compatibility issue!

I just checked the ECS site, and none of their kt600 boards have 4 pci slots (the one being sold at Outpost has 4 pci slots). All of the ECS kt600 boards show 5 pci slots. Uhm..., what's going on?!

5 PCI slots seems to be pretty standard. I have three SocketA motherboards, and they all have 5 PCI slots.

I just checked newegg, and they used to carry this kt600 board with 4 pci slots. Very good reviews, overall. Considering that this Sempron retail chips costs $74 at newegg, and $72.50 at zipzoomfly, I'm going to order this. It seems like a very good deal.

Here's a link to the kt600 board. Supports SATA and raid 0 and 1. I'd think that it's a warmer deal than the kt333. Glad I waited till I got home from work to find out about it and order.. :)

I just placed my order with the kt600a board. I asked about the rma policy and Outpost says I have 30 days. Here's the real deal. If you have to rma the stuff back and pay for the return shipping, did you know that Outpost will reimburse you for the return shipping cost? What a freakin' great deal! Spread the Word! You don't have to worry about the return shipping charge anymore!

If you call and speak to a great guy named "Pete" (I ordered my stuff with him just now) tell him you know me, Douglas :) Happy Holidays everyone!
