Backordered opteron @ Monarch?

I'm late to the Opteron party, but still want to jump on the wagon when/if the next(last?) shipments come out. Monarch seems to have the best price, but their salesperson told me that they'll charge your credit card before they receive/ship your cpu. How reliable are they? How fast will they credit you if their shipment isn't sufficient for their backorders?

We learned the hard way that as merchants, we *have* to charge you the day you order, even if it doesn't ship right away. Visa/Mastecard rules state that if we hold a credit authorization without charging for more than about 36 hours, we have to pay double the fees on it. With margins being so low in this business, that kills you. We got burned big time with the X2 pre-orders. When all was said and done, we lost a few hundred bucks from all of that.

Monarch is fairly reliable. I don't know how quick they credit back if need be, but it doesn't hurt to call them and ask 🙂

Tankguys,

Thanks for the explanation from the reseller end. Just wish the ETA wasn't SO far awaaay. I want my opteron. I think I'm gonna give myself a Xmas present!

I don't know why everyone keeps saying this 😕

I have seen 0 evidence that it's been discontinued. They are just not widely available right now. They are still listed by all the distributors, all of whom still have incoming orders for them, with no indication of being end of line.

Just got off the phone with Monarch and the salesguy said they're still getting shipments of the 165's, but AMD is "short-shipping" them (i.e. instead of the 100 they ordered, they might get 50). More importantly, he said they're scheduled to get a shipment of OEM's in TOMORROW. They ordered about a hundred. They have 4 people on backorder for them. So if they get short-shipped to 50 pieces - you do the math- he-he.

They now have 5 people on backorder for the OEM's!

p.s. Retail ETA was more iffy and they had over one hundred people on backorder for them. The quantity they ordered (if short-shipped) wouldn't cover the existing backordered Retails so I opted for the OEM with $15 3 yr warranty (in case I break a leg and don't get around to OC'ing till 6 months from now).

This is based on my trusting of what the salesguy told me. I'm not responsible for any financial foolishness that may result from my dissemination of the above information.

How is Monarch the best price? They went from mid 100s to mid 200s in price. I am glad I got mine when I did. They raised the price within days of my order.

Yes, Phluxed, if you're going to go saying things like this, please have the courtesy to post proof to back up your statement.

My 170 was $356 from Monarch (OEM) and nobody else I could find had either for close to that.

Edit: saw the $350 165 link. So I got my 170 for $6 more (I don;t need the HSF, have 8 spare OEM ones)

I was referring to the best current posted price. Do YOU know of a better posted price for the 165?? I live in CA so the Egg and ZZF would definitely be more expensive for me.

I'm in the middle of my first deal with Monarch and I'm not impressed.

Ordered DFI nF4 ULtra-D & Opty 170 last Wednesday. Come Friday it hasn't shipped or updated at all. I call and it turns out they don't have any nF4 Ultra-D's and are waiting for a shipment to come on that day (Friday) of which they will fill back orders and my order. It doesn't ship Friday and thus they were expecting the shipment Monday (yesterday). Nothing. He said they are going to refund the board and ship my 170 overnight. It is Tuesday. It still has not shipped. Great price on the 170, but they drop the fvcking ball too many times. I won't be ordering from them unless it is a KILLER deal. (And I must say tho, the 170 was for $356 😉)

Prices on the 165 will not be below $350 and $400 for the 170, until 939 is mostly supplanted by M2. Mark my words.

What happened is that between AMD and the retailers, somebody badly miscalculated the demand/price-point for the 165. Now that everyone knows better, prices will be higher the rest of the way out. Now, I don't want to imply that the 165 will become a bad deal, but if you didn't pull the trigger before it went OOS (I got in at the last moment 😛), you missed one of the best bargains of the year.

Oh yea? 🙂

Opty 165 Retail, $325

We'll be shipping again early next week, I've got 15 arriving at the end of this week, and I don't plan to price gouge on them, just like any other item 🙂

I've only ordered from Monarch two times. Once was for a processor, which they didn't ship out until 2 business days after my order. The second time, I bought a DFI NF4 Ultra-D and a Venice, back when the Venice was just being released, and the BIOS revision on the board that they sent me was so old it couldn't recognize the CPU properly and was behaving erratically. I don't think they are a bad company, but they seem to make a lot of small mistakes.

You got 15. Unles syour taking preorders on them, the chances that the OP will get in on one is low 🙂

Actually, I think Phluxed is the one contributing most to this, with no proof. I'm still waiting for you guys to get the single core Opterons back. I canceled a 146 order with you guys about a week ago after I bought a 4400+ and now I'm selling the 4400+ because it was a waste of money for me to have that fast of a dual core setup 😛

You'll change your tune if you ever have to deal with their customer service. Small mistakes are one thing, and even though the percentage of BIG mistakes made might be low relative to total orders, it's how they handle (or don't) the BIG mistakes that is their problem. They absolutely, positively do NOT have any interest in making you the customer happy in those situations. And that's something to be aware of.

I am very disappointed to see monarch gouging on the 170's now...$55 increse in price..total BS...looks like I will stay away

I don;t agree. I ordered a while back and changed the order. Once I called and complained about how long it too, they sent it overnight. The I just ordered a 170 Sunday night, and they shipped it monday night. I think the mobo-cpu combos take longer.
