A friend of mine registered a domain name and it has now expired. It's registered through godaddy. I haven't been able to get a hold of him (out of the country). It currently has an expired domain page that godaddy put up. Is there a good way to guarantee that when the 30 day period ends, I can register it?

It looks like godaddy has a Backorder option for 18.99 (including 1 year registration). Is that a good service? I use namecheap for my domains, but it doesn't look like they have a similar option.

If the domain is registered with godaddy and it's a godaddy service, it seems like that should be the one you should choose.

Ahh, I thought that "backorder.com" was getting ready to be available, and thought to myself that you probably shouldn't have said anything :)

That's what I was thinking, but I was hoping that other people might have experience either with them or with another service.
