Backing up to "Deathstar" Replacement

I want to switch my backup hard drive to a new IBM that I got as a replacement for a deathstar. Currently I have a 20GB drive as drive C: with just mp3s, pictures, installation files, etc. I also have an 80GB drive as drive F: with my winxp installation on it. (don't ask, stupid fdisk)

Tell me if this plan of action will work:

1) Copy all files on backup drive to my main drive.
2) Format old drive. (I plan to sell it.)
3) Open case, remove old drive, install new drive in the same channel (primary slave)
4) Copy files from main drive to new backup drive.
5) Smile and go back to gaming 😀

I am just worried that when I pull out my "C" drive, my current F drive will revert to C and my whole system will be hosed.

Let me know!

Thanks!

Hi,

I think that should work (though I offer no guarantee!!!). If F: reverts to C:, you can change that back in "My Computer (Right-Click) --> Manage --> Storage..."

You might also be interested in knowing that if Win XP setup assigns your desired C to F and vice versa during installation this can be fixed. If you go for a clean install (booting off the CD) and wait for the usual partition management screen to appear you may see that you would like the drive letters automatically assigned to be changed/swapped. To do this first play along, agree to format the partitions and then let windows finish "copying setup files". When it reboots usually you let the computer boot off of the HD to continue the installation. Do NOT do this! Instead once again boot off of the CD. When you again get to the partition management screen windows will now correctly map C: to the boot drive and D/E/F etc to the other(s). I know this works as I've done it many times!

Good luck,

Andy
