Backing up files from an old Compaq with Win95

I have an 8 year old presario (P1, 200MHz, 16MBs of RAM, Windows 95) that I haven't used in some time. My father decided to give the PC to the son of a friend of his, so I will reformat the HDD and add 32 megs of extra RAM to it so that he can at least surf the net.

However, before reformating, I'd like to retrieve some files I have in there, most of theme Word documents (including my thesis from college). The PC, of course, doesn't even have a a CD burner, nor ethernet . I tried using my modem-router (a 2Wire homeportal) via USB to configure a network and transfer the files to my XP PC, and although Windows does detect the hardwere, I don't think Win95 is supported in terms of drivers.

Any suggestions to make the modem-router work? The PC does have 2 USB ports. Should I try one of those USB storage devices? Are those supported in Win95?

There's probably some serial/parallel port solution out there but I'm guessing in the time it takes to get it setup you could just pop the drive out, add it as a secondary to your existing machine and get your data.



edit: Yes, the second release of Windows 95 supported USB devices. Based on the processor speed you likely have the newer Win95. You might need a driver floppy, but a USB thumb drive or something should work.

I would suggest just popping the drive out and plugging it into another computer. Since you will be opening it up to install more RAM, it will only take about 45 seconds to unscrew the drive and unplug the cables. Also, you may want to clean out the dust while you have it open.

Also, you'd be able to WIPE THE HDD CLEAN AS YOU CAN before you pass it onto to some scally

The HDD transfer sounds like the most viable option. I did try using an USB jump drive; Win95 just woudn't recognize it though.

I'll have to open the old Presario anyway to pop the RAM in, so I might as well take the HD for a ride.
