I have Veritas Backup Exec running our server nightly backing up various data directories. About 75% of the time though it has issues backing up the ACT! database files for no apparent reason.

The error log shows the following:

Backup- D: Unable to open the item D:\Program Files\ACT\Database\Badger.ADF - skipped.
Unable to open the item D:\Program Files\ACT\Database\Badger.ALF - skipped.

These files are not open (nobody is logged into the system at 1am). I just simply can't get this to work.

Suggestions?

no idea what act is but, I'm just guessing it runs as a service, so try to disable the service before backup starts and then restart it after backup is done

You may want to get the SQL agent for Backup Exec. It should allow you to back the DB up "on the fly" so to speak.

yeah thats the problem. The BE they have is just the "QuickStart" edition which doesn't have many features enabled. I set up a couple easy .bat files that will stop/start the MSSQL$ACT7 service before/after BE starts the backup which such suffice and save (this small business) $500 for the full blown BE 11d
