Backing up a Macbook Pro

Hi guys.

I want to make an automated backup solution.
My setup:

A number of PCs
A Macbook Pro
A Synology DS106j NAS with a 1TB external drive attached.

The PCs are easy. I mount the external drive as a network drive on bootup, and use Memeo Backup (bundled with another external drive). It happily chugs away in the background, keeping the PCs backed up.

The Mac is another matter. Time Machine is much praised, but appearently cannot backup to network drives without AirPort. Seriously? Am I missing something here? Or do I need to get a 3rd party app?

I personally like Time Machine. Not sure what problems people have with it, but it works fine for me. You can indeed backup to a network drive, but it has to be HFS+ formatted, and not FAT32/NTFS.

You can use this method to setup a Sparse disk bundle that will allow you to backup to the network drive, I believe.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So my options are to buy a backup app or hack Time Machine? I am not impressed, Apple.

You already bought a third party solution for you PCs... not sure why it was ok for Microsoft but not for Apple.

I think that if you have an Airport Extreme it is easier to set up a network Time Machine. Also I believe that it works on WHS.
