I am running Windows XP PRO and inadvertently deleted my background file which I wanted to keep. It's not in the recycle bin either (that's been cleaned out as well). But, the background image is still there. I searched for the name but it's not found. I've looked in the registry and it shows up under .../Control Panel/ Software/ Microsoft/ Windows/ Current Version/ Themes/ Last Themes. But unfortunately, I'm unable to copy the file (from this location) to my HDD. Any help to retrieve this file (.jpg) would be greatly appreciated.

If you know the name of the image, you should be able to search for it.

I do know that Windows XP stores your background images in a different location. I don't remember where it is right now, but I do know that I searched for it and was able to find it.

Check the Windows directory itself. What does the display properties tab list as the current background?

Try searching by going to START > Search, and type the following in All Files and Folders *.jpg Browse the results and look for what might be called the file you are looking for. Next try a different file association *.bmp

If you right clicked on the image and used "Set as Wallpaper" from I.E. then it probably copied the file to a "My Wallpapers" folder, which much like the "My Pictures" and such is a subset of My Documents. Check there.
