Backed into someones car this morning

I live in a townhouse complex. This morning I was going to run an errand and I came out to my car. There was noone near it. Someone between when I opened my door and started the car someone came around the corner and stopped their car directly behind mine. I looked to the left and to the right to make sure noone was coming, then took a quick glance in my rear view and proceeded to back up.

*crunch*

Who the hell does that? Some FOB asian chick decided to stop directly behind my car in a blind spot and look at a map. The only way I would have seen her is if I had turned around and looked back. In the 3 years i've lived there not once has someone been back there. Lesson learned I guess...

Anyway...

I dented her rear door pretty good, and the rear corner of my car is dented. It is just the one piece of plastic though, so I think they can just pop on a replacement. I'm more worried about what it will cost to replace her door. It was a pretty old acura. Any thoughts on that type of damage?

My question is, since i've never hit anyone before or had to file and insurance claim in 9 years of driving, what do I do if I want to just cut her a check for the repair? Is there anything official that has to happen?

I called my insurance (state farm) and filed a claim, but my deductible is $1000, so it might be easier to pay out of pocket. Do I just take her word for it as to how much the damage is going to be, or should she give me an official piece of paper stating what the repair will cost?

I recently hit a deer. Not too hard, but enough to put a slight dent in the left fender. There was a barely noticeable ding in the hood and a barely noticable ding in the driver's door. My side mirror was ripped off. Total damages, $1,700. $800 of that was paint because they had to replace the fender and when they have to replace something, they have to paint it. Really, the damage didn't look bad at all but it cost a ton. It went on the insurance.

Just FYI.

Good luck.

I was thinking the same thing, aren't you supposed to look BEHIND you before backing up?

Don't blame the "FOB". It could have been a little kid. Well, don't feel bad. You're exactly like all the other drivers I see out there who back up and don't bother to look back. Hell, some of them don't even look at their rear-view, just some fixed point ahead for alignment.

Heh, I bet you're pretty pissed right now, but you're going to see how funny this looks in a month or two (unless your insurance skyrockets).

You may not have a deductible on the repair to her car, only for yours.

Where did I say it was her fault? Actually, I seem to racall admitting it was my fault when I said lesson learned. Had it been her fault I wouldnt be paying for it... And yes, I am a great driver. In 9 years of driving, up until now, I havent so much as put a scratch in my own or any other car. I would have to say I am a damn good driver.

Not when you are backing out onto a ROAD. Normally you expect people to be driving, so you look left and right. Considering there was noone there when I got into my car, I just took a quick glance in my rear view and didnt see anything.

You should always look behind you when your backing up(it does not matter if it's a fucking driveway, road, or a parking space). What if wasn't a car... What if it was a kid? or Someones pet? Think before you drive.

Uh, if it was someones kid or pet, I wouldnt have seen it by looking back if they werent visible in the rear view. Hows the view from your high horse?

I agree. The first thing I learned when I was starting to drive is to look where you are going. If you're backing up you better be looking behind you. This is your fault.

He said it was his fault.

But it doesn't mean the bitch still isn't stupid, lol.

Forget it..

Body damage is going to kill you, especially if that rear door damage extends even just a tiny bit to other parts of the car. I hit a 1992 Toyota Tercel and damaged the rear fender, my insurance ended up paying $1700 for it. You find out the cost by having her get a couple of estimates at auto repair shops.

And wherever she is FOB from must train drivers better than where you live, because what kind of idiot reverses into a parked car?

You do realize that when you back up things come at you from behind right? Fact is, you SHOULD be looking out the rear window when backing a car.

Jeez, the OP admitted fault already. Any more vilification means you're just wanking yourself.

I can see where he made his mistake; when I stop, it's never in front of a driveway. Just doesn't make sense. I'll bet she was surprised.

You don't use the goddamn rear view mirror to back up. The only time you use mirrors to back up is if you have a trailer or something that blocks your view out the rear window.

To back up, you turn the fvck around in the seat and LOOK BACKWARDS.
