Back Up software that came with Vista (keeps failing)

Hi guys. I built my computer this summer and put Vista on it. I've been busy lately so I hadn't gotten a chance to backup the computer.

I went to system tools -> Backup Status and Configuration.

I've tried to run a full backup now about three times and it keeps failing because it says and error occured.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Here's a screenshot:
Prompt that comes up

I've wasted three DVDs... so... if anyone could help me out I'd love ya forever^ ^

Thanks a ton,

Mark

To save DVDs, put in another hard drive or hook up an external and use that as a backup until you get the issue resolved.

wows! thanks a ton acole1

i was thinking it had something to do with sp1 but it won't install. ugg i dno i'll try to install it again.

that's pretty sweet 😛

I installed Service Pack 1 finally. But the back up program stillllll gives me the same error!!! >_< gah except this time it got through backing up two DVDs worth before erroring 🙁

if anyone has some insight on what to do... I'm all ears.

I disabled my comodo firewall but it still didn't help.
I have avast running but I wouldn't think that would have an affect on it....
I'll try again with avast shut down completely...

but before i try that and waste more DVDs where can i find the classic ntbackup ....?

does Vista Home Premium allow a complete backup? I don't have Vista so i can't be sure.
from wikipedia "Vista Home Premium and Home Basic, users can only backup personal files, not system files"
sorry if I'm no help

Here's the instructions: http://www.petri.co.il/install...p_on_windows_vista.htm

One little thing about using NTbackup is that is doesn't seem to schedule jobs properly with Vista. So if you are using automated backups, then you have to manually schedule the job through Task Scheduler using NTBackup's command line options.

NTBackup and Vista Task Scheduler

Thanks for that help guys.

I'm still not sure what to do about it...

I disabled alll of my antivirus, etcccc and disconnected from internet. THEN tried.... it worked all 11 dvds... lol

So... you guys are saying that you...can't schedule it? it has the option to... ( i'm talking about Vista's backup program )

thanks

EDIT:
(oh i have another Q tho..)
if i can schedule it... how am i suppose to disable all my stuff and disconnect from internet

hehehe...i am VERY certain it might be the dreaded "mobsync.exe" and "wmplayer" running in the background,. The problem is once you insert a medium those lock the DVD. Its a BITCH to get rid of those...and for me the workaround to keep mobsync/wmplayer constantly running in the background was take ownership of mobsync.exe in windows/system32 and RENAME mobsync.exe to "mobsync.FREAKINGGOAWAY" or simliar.

Check in taskmanager if you have this problem, whether mobsync.exe or wmplayer are running..you can also kill any of those tasks....but i had a very, very hard time to get rid of this and thats why i "brute force" renamed the file.

What kind of backup is this? Is it backing select files or is it backing the entire system?

If it's just files, try using Microsoft SyncToy. It does sort-of incremental backups based on modification date, so it's very fast. I have over 200gb of stuff backed up on an external hard drive with this tool, and it takes less than 5 minutes to do it each time.

I use synctoy as well. Vista's Backup program just seems to re-backup everything again and again instead of doing things in proper increments....wasting space. I wish it had an "echo" setting like synctoy, because I certainly do appreciate the file compression.
